Are Star Heads Specific to Cal.?
« on: August 15, 2007, 12:13:43 am »
My brother recently passed away after a 5yr battle with cancer.  He was a competitive bullseye shooter and had a Star set up for 45acp with a extra head with dies and shell plate for 38/357.  Is it possible to just swap out the 38 dies in the head with 44mag dies and change the shell plate to load 44s?  If not what is needed to set up the press for 44mag.?  I would like to be able to use it for both 45 and 44.

Curt,

Yes you can switch dies & shellplate. Most of the heads have the star proprietary threads so star dies are needed. There is a seller on ebay who recuts threads on 7/8-14 dies for use in the star. In the case you don't have the star dies contact me and I'll try to find his e-mail. Seems that dies & plates go quite high on ebay which is about the only place I'm aware of that you see star parts.
Good Luck!

Curt,

38/357 Cal use small pistol primers, where as 44 and 45 Cal use large pistol primers.  Therefore, you will also need to change all the hardware from small primers to large primers.
