Tool head die holes Question??
« on: February 16, 2016, 07:58:06 am »
From looking at the tool head it appears that the sizing hole and taper crimp hole can be opened to 7/8x 14 (standard die size )
Is enough room to open up the seating hole to allow the use of a micrometer type seating die??
Any info helpful
Thanks

It can be done, but is not recommended.   You will probably have to modify the Powder Slide Housing to make room for a 7/8-14 die.  Also many 7/8-14 seating dies are too tall and will conflict with the Tool Head Anchor Screw and Spring..   You will probably also have to modify some dies.  The sizing die in particular is too big to fit into the recess in the shell plate so you will have to reduce the diameter of the nose in order to do full length sizing.

Bruce Star sold tool heads modified for 7/8 14 dies they also recess the shell plates for the dies. I have several machines that are that way.

I have tuned down the larger dies and re-trheaded them to work on the Star tool head,, Much better to do this than ruin a tool head trying to drill out and re-thread the hole. It is very hard to drill the hole out and keep it straight and remain where it is supposed to be. Don't ask Me how I know this.

bkbc38,   I am aware that Star made some 7/8" tool heads, and also, that in later years the recesses in the top of some of their shell plates could accommodate a 7/8" die.  However, the vast majority of shell plates that are out there, and those that I sell now are not compatible with a 7/8" die unless the die is modified.

Greetings,

I have a CPM progressive machine (Sort of a Star Clone) that was originally created with the 7/8-14 threads.

Since it gathers dust, I could be motivated into selling/trading it.

It has the 45 ACP shell plate and 38 Special shell plate.

Not sure; but, I think there is clearance for the adjustable seating die.

Cheers,

Dave

I also have an old CPM.. Works like a champ for me. have the 45 and 38 conversion for it too.  Has a Freeloader on it...

I still load my main bullseye loads with it.. Use my Dillons for other calibers and experimental loads.

Not selling mine.....

You could order a tool head from Star that used regular dies.  If I remember correctly some minor adjustments had to be made to one of the dies but such tool heads were available as a special order.

Greetings,

If you need a progressive machine that uses the 7/8-14 dies, there are plenty on the market to choose from.

No need to ruin a classic piece of equipment.

Cheers,
