Anyone know what flavor of feeder this is?
« on: April 12, 2014, 08:17:52 pm »
Hi Star users,

Several years ago I bought my first Star press from a commercial re-loader.
A bullet feeder came with it that I have never used.

There is no name of manufacture or any information stamped anywhere on this after-market add-on.

Being that there are so many knowledgeable people on this forum maybe we can kick it around and find out who made it and where it came from.

It can be seen at:

Thanks for looking,

Joe

Sorry, can't open up the link.

Never saw one like it, and I have seen a few variants.  I would suspect this could be a home made job from a Star owner.  It looks to have too many parts to be a successful commercial unit.  Course I could be all wet on this.

No one seems to have any idea who made this bullet feeder.; it doesn't really matter as it will most likely go on eBay before the summer is over.

It has 38 spl feeder in place as shown and there are adapters for 9mm, .44 spl and mag, along with .45 acp and .45 LC.-

It's interesting but just taking up room around my bench.

Joe,

Looks to me that this unit was made by a Mr. Goldberg--- Rube Goldberg to be specific.

I never trusted any auto bullet feeder.  Nor did Ellerd and Bill of Star.

Thanks Jerry,

That's a lot more than I knew before I posted the image.

Just looked up who Mr. Goldburg was and have to agree that it's a complicated contraption for a simple job.

Being that it came off of the press first thing I can't say if it is any good or not.

Back from the dead...did you sell it???

I'm curious as to how it was attached. From the pics I suspect the main body was bolted to the tool head, that steel stuff is a seater/crimper die, and the part that cammed the bullet feed inwards screwed to the backside of the powder measure cam???

But I don't see how there would have been room for the lower tube think which looks like it would have enclosed the case, to get out of the way for the rest of the down/seating stroke...

 Hi Grump,

No it is not sold. It is not on my bucket list of important things to do.

Your assessment is correct as to the attachment to the press except for the dies.
The shown die is only for a seating function and does not go all the way down the case of the round being loaded.
It only lines-up the bullet and seats it to the proper depth.  This is done by moving the die up or down for proper adjustment.
The crimp die is in the last station on the head.

You have a bright mechanical mind to be able to look at the images and figure it out.

Research hasn’t shown who made it or where it came from as it appears to be manufactured and not home-made.
Thanks for the comments and assessment.

 Joe

Joe,

I looked at the picture and thought the bullet feeder looked familiar.  Take a look at the attached PDF file as I think it is the same device in your picture.

http://califpistolmatches.com/documents/Star_Machine/Reloaders%20Equipment.pdf

I remember seeing a bunch of accessories for the Star press back in the 60s and 70s when the Star was the reloading press to have.  What I was really interested was a bullet feeder for the Star sizer & lubricator this company made.  I still have their advertisement or flyer around here somewhere.  IIRC, it was a device similar to the Hulme feeder in that bullets were filled into a tube and the operator didn't have to touch the bullets.  Company claimed it doubled the operator speed and reduced pinched fingers and cuts.

Hi bummer7,

That is it for sure.

Many thanks for the information. This will afford any further look into origin and maker.
I am wondering if they are still in operation as a business.
If so, I will post anything new which may be of interest.
Will try the telephone number first.

Thanks again!!

Joe
