Greetings,

Look closely at the shell plate,

It was manufactured by Bubba Engineering.

Not an original Star.

Cheers,

Dave

I saw the one listed by rickets on ebay, it just looked very off. It may have worked but I am holding out for a richard daniels plate, star machine plate, or another respected manufacturer of star plates.

These plates are not cheap so I am prepared to pay to play.

I have a 9 mm and 223 shell plate both are marked berdan   Looks like they were made with mild steel not tool steel. Just checked my spares and that’s all I have. I did see that I have four hogue adjustable powder bars but those are getting hard to find now so a little reluctant to let them go. Might have to wait for the yard sale when I die.

Greetings,

I have a plastic tub full of Berdon roughed out shell plates.

Yes, they appear to be mild steel, as analyzed via XRF scanner.

The center holes (1 1/4") are much larger than the Star.

Also, double check the hole indexing of the plates. The Star plates are not indexed 30 degrees to the shell slots.

Berdon made some interesting stuff. He was local and I saw him at the Goon Shows.

Cheers,

Dave

Greetings,

Yours are not necessarily junk.

Just check the critical dimensions prior to use.

I have not seen any finished Berdon plates and they may be case hardened.

Cheers,

Dave

The 9 mm plate seems soft as the corners have gouges from use.  The 223 plate seems harder with no gouges.  I have 11 star machines and love them when I can find time to load. Have 9 mm, 40 s$w, 38 special 357 magnum 45 acp 38:super and 44 magnum all set up can’t remember who it was on here in the past that used to make beautiful star dies I bought numerous dies for the machines   Best thing is over the years have purchased tons of spare star parts. When I kick the bucket my son will have one hell of a yard sale.

Could anyone talk about the angle spacing of the features of the shell plate?

Berdon shell plates are not hardened and they are pretty sloppy too.    I have several of the machines as well as some parts.   None of the shell plates I have encountered are hardened.   I have a Berdon 9MM shell plate, but I wouldn't trust it to hold a 9MM case.   The sizing die would probably pull the case right through the shell plate.   I recently sold a Berdon 223 shell plate that worked better for 9MM than 223.   I sold it as a stop gap until I have new 9MM shell plates.
