The Holy Grail of Star dies

Steve here...   I had Dave (fc60) make up a set of 32 S&W Long Star dies... they  showed up yesterday. They are an absolute work of art!!!

Since the 32 S&W L is smaller than the 38 Spl, I am wondering why it wouldn't be relatively simple to convert a Star Progressive (not Universal) to this caliber.  Is it the shell plate?  Something else?  Inquiring minds...

Still wonderin' whether my disused 38 Progressive could become an actively used 38 S&W Long or 327 Fed Mag Progressive.  Is anyone willing to take it on (and make me a proposal as to cost, time frame, etc.?)  We've established that some very nice dies are available from fc60.

I have a 38 S&W shell plate. Not the 38 Special; but, 38 S&W. The 38 S&W case diameter is slightly larger than a 38 Special.

With a set of 38 Super/ACP dies, you would be all set.

Only question is whether or not the 38 S&W shell plate will fit into your Progressive machine. I only have Universals, so I cannot test.

Regarding the 327 or similar cases, I would not think a Progressive would be a good choice. The cases would have a tendency to migrate to the outer edge out of the axis of the dies. I foresee several cases getting squashed or having large dents where the die comes down on a case that is not in alignment.

I know Dave will cringe at this suggestion, but (if your progressive machine is in less than collector grade) what about drilling and tapping the base at each station for spring loaded ball detent set screws? I was thinking about doing this on a base that I need to weld up and have Dave skim cut to original condition.

Hello All,

Just wanted to comment on Super Dave Wilson.  Loaded thousand rounds of 9mm Makarov with a set of dies Dave made for us. Excellent Quality workmanship. Loads look better than factory. He has done great work for me.  I put an order in for a set of 44/40 dies and am sure they will be good to go.  Thanks Dave.

  arrived a couple days ago. In the past he has made three complete
  sets of dies for me which also included Taper crimp dies, He also has made
  three separate taper crimp dies in different calibers for me. His dies are
  fantastic and anyone thinking about new dies for their Star should
  consider having Dave make them. You can see above that I'm not alone
  talking about his outstanding workmanship. He is a true Craftsman.

I had one.  Just placed an order and it showed up back in 1991 according to the invoice.  Also had a 32 ACP and 475 Wildey tool head bought about the same time.

I had a Progressive in 32 S&W Long.  There were no modifications other than an installed shell plate and toolhead.  I believe the original Progressives were offered in .32 Long as well as .38 Special.  Mine worked fine.  It was a little slower than what I was accustomed to as the press did not have a Hulme Feeder installed.

Btw, Dave's work is first rate.
