Loading 44-40 W.C.F. on a Star Universal
« on: March 29, 2017, 07:53:32 am »
Anyone done it? I assume I can use an expander for 44 Magnum, and the 45 Colt shellplate seems to fit perfectly. I will not be sizing the brass on the Star, so no need for a sizing die. I guess a 45 Colt seater will work, or possibly one for 44 Magnum? But what about the crimp?

Greetings,

I recently machined a shell plate for the 44-40 WCF. It is much different than the 45 Colt. The rim thickness is not the same and the body diameter is also different.

The brass is rather thin walled and sizing is possible in the machine.

Check with Bruce Williams at Star Machine Works. He is the one I made it for.

Cheers,

Dave

Hi, Dave,
thanks for your input. I made an order with Bruce for a 45 Colt shellplate, but I now figured I should wait for a proper one in 44-40. It's better to get it right. What's your current turnaround time?
Thanks again.
