First time I had this problem?
  I took my 9mm press apart over the winter, Just run my first shells to check press, In the middle of the cart./ i have a s back mule look, How far should the seater die be off the shell plate to get best cart,s?

I would back out the seating die and the stem, put an already loaded round in that position and lower the tool head.
screw down the seating die until resistance is felt and do the same with the stem.  Lock the die in place and try an empty case
and bullet to see if your adjustment is correct.  If you screw the die down too far you will buckle the case which you have already found out. 9mm takes a slight tapered crimp.  I like to crimp on the last station and Dave (fc60) makes a super tapered crimper.  Remember opinions are like V.W.'s, everybody has one but this works for me.
