Question about dies
« on: July 16, 2014, 04:03:31 pm »
Hello all,
Did any of the manufactures that made dies for the Star ever use a seat/crimp combination die or did they always use a separate crimp die in the final station?

         Thanks,
               Dave

Greetings,

All of the Genuine Star Dies I have encountered have a "roll crimp" in the seating die.

Cheers,

Dave

Thanks for the reply Dave! I have another one for if you don't mind. Will the bell mandrel out of a .38/.357 die set work for 9mm as well?

      Thanks again,
                Dave

Perhaps this info will help, I'm sure that the more experianced will have the answer for You soon.

Case mouth:

.38 Spl.     .359 for lead
                .358 for jacketed

9mm        .3555

The .38 Spl case is of the straight wall type
The 9mm is tapered

Good Shooting

In a word, NO, not as is. But there are ways to make it work since it can be made smaller. The length is about a 1/4" inch to long and the end will hit the taper (thicker case wall) inside the 9mm before the bell expander meets the neck. I did this and by reducing the dia to .356 and cutting off and redoing the end I am able to use it very satisfactorily.
