Stud type taper crimp die

Anyone have a .38 SPL "stud type" taper crimp die to spare, I cant seem to find mine in that junk heap of a reloading room. I have a few Star Parts for trade or
cash if You have one to spare and don't need parts.

45 ACP, but not 38 Special.   Those are pretty rare.  I know they exist, but I don't think I have ever seen one.

You are right about there not being to many .38 stud type T/Cs, but they do exist , I just cant find mine. so looks as if I'll have to try and make one up.
Perhaps from a T/C die that I'll cut down and then weld a stud onto it.

I think it would be easier to just drill and tap the head for the standard 11/16-24 dies.   I can do that for you if you like.

Thanks for the offer Bruce, but I have the equipment to do all that, It's just a matter of getting off my tail and get started on it.
I like to keep my machines without modification, so I think I'll cut down a standard tapercrimp die and then weld a stud onto it.

The later Model Star Heads were drilled & taped for 11/16 x 24 TPI......SO,
It would be proper to do that for your Head.....

  For what it is worth;  I went the drill and tap route and am very happy with the results.  Excellent workmanship on the head and the taper crimp die.  My machinist neighbor was impressed.

I have a Progressive model machine that has the last station drilled and tapped but the machine will not allow the use of it unless machine work is done to the base of the machine. 

It must have been easier for Star to make all the toolheads the same.

You must have a later model toolhead on an older base, The progressive model wasn't sold with a drilled and tapped tool head, only the later model Universal's
had this feature.

I have two late model Progressives sitting in the basement.  Both Drilled and tapped for a 11/16-24 taper crimp die.

Also CF Ness wrote a review of the Star Progressive which appeared in the May 1934 issue of Amerian Rifleman.  In that article he mentioned the Star Universal which had just come out.  As best as I can figure, Star produced both machines until about 1981, which is when the Progressive no longer appeared on their price list.

We haven't exactly tracked down the beginnings of the 11/16-24 Taper Crimp die, but Dave Wilson has a 1972 Gil Hebard catalog which offers both the post type and the 11/16-24 taper crimp dies.  It's a pretty good bet that Star was drilling and tapping tool heads for the 11/16-24 by then.

Well then I stand corrected, It slipped my mind that Star continued to produce the progressive after they came out with the universal, But then I have to wonder why
all five of my Star universal machines have the un-threaded hole at the last station,  I bought the first machine in 1956 and the last one in about 1981 or 82.

For what it's worth, there is a stud type 38 Special Taper Crimp die on eBay now.  I believe someone else was looking for one as well, but I can't find the posting.  EBay Item 190677589749
