Star Reloaders / Shockey progressive on ebay

Look at the Shockey progressive listed under "Star reloading."  As an item of academic interest, I'd like to hear if Ken Walters has ever seen one.  I assume it was built by Richard Shockey, the El Reno, OK. pistolsmith.

I went with the New Mexico pistol team in 1984 and 1987.  It's a great experience, but I hate to fly with guns, and it's a long way from New Mexico by car.  And I can get in trips to Gunnison, CO and to the Whittington for the CO and NM state matches and regionals with just a few hours of driving.  The Whittington has a bullseye range roughed out but undeveloped and NM state match is shot on the PPC range.  This year's match is Sept. 12-13.  Visit the Whittington:  it's your range.

Above advice sounds right on the money.  I have found that CCI primers can be a bit harder than some to seat w/o damagine them.  Like the above folks, I like Wincester.  Assume you will be using a roundnose bullet for Single action cowboy type matches.  Back off the seating screw on the seating die and tighten gradually.  (This assumes that tool was set up for deep-seating wadcutters, as so many were for bullseye matches.)

The idea of selling the Star on Ebay with a reserve price of $450 (or 500 since it has a Hulme) or so is a good one.  It would also be a good idea to watch Ebay for a few weeks before listing.  And if your reserve is not met, don't despair.  The pool of bidders changes from week to week.  I've seen Hulme feeders go for 150, and there is one up now that is currently at 50 with several days to go.  The last few days always show a flurry of bidding, and sometimes bidders get carried away and bid far more than might have been expected.

I wish I'd encountered your Star before I got mine.  I had to add an O'Neill case feeder (an excellent version of the Hulme design) as well as a new carbide die, a safety cam, and a primer magazine.

Yep, I had never noticed that little pinprick.  Got the cam on, taper crimp die out, seating die readjusted to crimp, and cam filed slightly so it didn't collide with my case-feeder, a Hulme clone.  It works.

Star Reloaders / safety cam spring

Being new to progressive reloaders, I'm nervous about a double charge.  I got tired of peering into the case every time, so I just bought a safety cam for my Star, complete with spring.  I'm trying to install, but where do I attach the (short) free end of the spring so that cam will return to counter clockwise position and block the head from being pulled a second time w/o rotation?

Cleaned and lubed, this time w. light coat of Anderol.  (Removed graphite lube in cleaning.)  Then readjusted the thrust nut.  Still hard to turn.  Then I examined the shell base locating straps--one was dragging.  Readjusted and now tool works fine.  I feel stupid, but relieved.

Just recently my shell plate has been harder to turn.  (Universal press, loading .45 ACP.)  I've tried raising the shell plate thrust nut, wiping the underside of the shell plate and thrust nut and the floor base under the shell plate.  Nothing looks scored or worn.  I sprayed a bit of powdered graphite on the floor base and on the top of the shell plate where it contacts the thrust nut.  Then I screwed down the thrust nut to a position very slightly looser than it had been.  I'm a fairly new Star user, but I've loaded some 500-1000 rounds before this problem surfaced.  I've got the original Star instruction sheet, but it seems to say nothing about lubing this area.

Does anyone lube this area with liquid lube?  I've felt the graphite is better since it will not attract primer grit, etc.
