I use the same expander plug for both lead and jacketed bullets.  Never had a problem.  It's the one that came with the press, never measured it.

Warren,  thanks for that clear and concise answer. I was scratching my head over this post, since all of my Stars have taper crimp dies installed and no safety cams.

I tried 4.1 grains of 231 with a 200 grain SWC lead bullet.  Nice starting load for Bullseye matches.  4.2 should work as a starting load for the 230 FMJ bullet.

The only .223 machine I ever saw had links (part 63), that were curved rather than straight, to give more mechanical advantage when sizing the cases.  Sorry I don't have a photo.  The guy that owned it was a collector in Dallas. I had sold him some Dillon parts.  He had several Stars hanging in his workshop, along with the .223 one.

I have a powder hopper/reservoir that I purchased a while back that is longer than the standard usually found on a Star.  It is actually a little too big.  What can I use to cut off a couple inches without destroying it in the process?  Thanks in advance.

Just a follow up.  Even though I repaired the upper powder slide housing, I went ahead and ordered a new one from Bruce.  Glad there is someone out there who took over the company and is making repair parts.

I checked the brass threads on the powder reservoir and there were no chips or anything that looked like the piece that embedded itself in the top of the housing.  The threads were clean and all there.  I guess it will remain a mystery.  I checked with Bruce about getting a new housing top, just to have a spare, but I need to see what other parts might be nice to have around.  In all the years I've owned this press, the only thing that ever broke was the tool head spring and I got a spare when I ordered the replacement back when Star was in business in San Diego.

Thanks.  It's a newer plastic powder reservoir but I will check the threads.  No powder drain.  The cardboard was in a new plastic container of Bullseye.  When I called them to complain, they just shrugged it off.

I've never had this happen before.  I was loading some .45 ACP's when the press started to make a horrible sound when I would pull down on the handle.  I stopped loading and took it apart.  A small piece of debris, that looked like brass had embedded itself in the upper powder slide housing and it cut a groove in the top of the powder slide to the rear of the hole.  I can't imagine where it came from, unless it was in the can of powder I was using; Bullseye.  It would not be the first time I had something foreign in a can of Bullseye.  One time it was a small piece of cardboard.

I could not get whatever it was out of the housing, so I took a fine Swiss file and carefully smoothed it out.  After putting everything back together, it all seemed to work as intended.

I've used S&B primers for a couple of years now, when I can't find Winchesters.  They all have gone bang.  I've also used Tula primers, but their specs are a little off and I have had them jam the machine.

If you type in your email the regular way with the "at" sign and no spaces, it will edit it out.  You have to type it like "my email name" at yahoo.com or whatever the end server is.  Mine would be cdrt05 at yahoo.com, for example.   If I typed it in the regular way it looks like this: [no e-mail]@.com
