It is a case indexer that advances the shell plate as the handle of the press is worked.

From what I could gather off of the net, the extractor groove for a .45Lc is .450". The extractor groove for a .45acp is only .394".
So it is looking more like to be a .45Lc shell plate.
The die has those funny 2 lines cut into it with what I think is a die grinder or cut off wheel not a cold chisel. Somebody put them there to identify something.
I think you will need to use a resized case or a new cartridge to see how they fit into the sizing die. The fired case will expand a few or several thousands of an inch and throw off your findings.
Let us know what you find.

Look on e-bay for 45LC shell plates. They go for more than .45acp plates. Maybe 3 times?
Are the dies correct? Marked .45acp and not .45LC? Several hundred dollars difference.
The .45acp dies are the second most popular dies in the Star line up.
Shell plates are out there.

Star History / Powder Shut-Off

A old progressive press showed up on e-bay this week. It has a Star metal tag on the outside edge ot the tool head. What was different about this machine was that it had a neat powder shut-off built into the powder slide housing. Had not seen anything like this before in the housing. Anyone else seen this before?

There is a head set up for 45 COLT on e-bay now but I've seen other dies in the past. (https://www.ebay.com/itm/STAR-MACHINE-WORKS-RELOADING-45LC-45-Long-Colt-Conversion-Carbide-Dies-RARE/143884169806?)I think that will get you there. They strike over the ACP with COLT and I assume adjust the die to size.

I see some dies for sale that have been re-stamped over the .45 acp and changed to .45 LC. How is that done?
Not the stamping but the changing of the bore? Is that a hone? Or is it done with a super hard cutter in a
boring bar?
The carbide is hard so it must take a real hard tool to do it.

Sorry I just saw that nobody has answered the question.
I copied one off of the the RCBS Rock Chucker that was on the bench next to it.
I'm in the machine shop for work several days a week so it was easy to ask to make one.
Seems to remember a 1/2 rod threaded on one end and a 2 inch plastic ball from McMaster-Carr.
Warmed it up and put a couple of bends in it and it took care of my needs.
The stock wooden handle does the same with the round end. You can palm the handle as you go
thru the motion unlike the hold on the roller handle.

I have used roller handles in the past but I prefer the round ball over the roller. With the roller you are stuck with the one position with your wrist and with the ball it seems to have more motion while making the turn so it does not get fatigued as bad.

I would love to own one to have up on the shelf to look at but I would not load on it.
I shoot service rifle so I load several thousands of .223 a year but they are all batch done on a rock chucker. Actually I have 2 presses right side by side to each other.
I have a couple of Dillon 550's that could load rifle rounds but I feel the primers can not be felt on a press so I hand prime them. Also I do not think the powder measures throw evenly enough for competition shooting to load with the progressive.
I guess I could get or make an adapter to use my Harrells measure but batch loading seems to work out okay.
I do load a bunch of .223s. I batch load with a 5 gallon bucket. 3700 empties fit in a 5 gallon bucket.
You are correct about the worth of the Stars being low to a new re-loader or a non-Star brand re-loader.
They just don't appreciate the value until they have seen one run. And run.
You will never hear of other machine brand owners talk about getting 250 thousand loadings off of their brand without a major rebuild or two.

If the .223 Super Stars Conversions are worth so much or costing so much how come we don't see more copies of them?
Are the links, the powder tube, and the dies the only difference?
Just saw a conversion on flea-bay and the asking price is 1850 dollars.
Seems a bit steep?
