Just in case you haven't heard, Ray-Vin is making the indexers and case kickers once again.
We retired in 2010, but after three years of BORING, I realized this work was my hobby and I put together a new shop and picked up where we left off.
Indexers and kickers are in stock and ship same or next business day.
Regards, Ray

I made a simple riser for my Star. I just clamp it to the bench when I need to reload.

I pulled the indexer off for a better view.

Ken,
You got me to looking. I haven't found that Winchester patent yet, but I searched on Clerance R. Peterson and found an indexer patent by a Michael G. Hoyer. It looks like the patent the Bruster is based on. It is number 3058387.

Ron,
Marianna, in the panhandle. Only 2 miles from exit 142 on I-10, but about 300 miles away from y'all.

That ejector is sure different than the safety thing that came with my Star! Is it a Star item?
As far as taper crimp dies coming all the way down, I don't doubt that some do this, but is it necessary? Couldn't the die be shortened at the bottom where it isn't doing anything to the case?

I too am exploring auto ejection. I have a taper crimp at the last station. I am told I need to elongate the notch in the collar and put a wire cam such that when the dial rotates the wire cams the round out through the wider notch. I really don't want to modify the collar and I am thinking some kind of 'kicker' that would be cocked on the down stroke and then be triggered on the up stroke just before indexing occurs.

Creekwalker,
I have used Dillons, but I bought a Star when I took up bullseye pistol. At first I was a little scared by it since the Dillons have so many safety gadgets available.
As designed, the Star has a lot of mechanical safety built in. You can't stroke it if a primed case is in the primer station. You can't stroke it if you didn't rotate the dial. These things prevent double charges. However, I still have had one double charge since my press is set up with a taper crimp die which requires removing the interlock.
As a tool and die maker, the Star is a machine tool. While the Dillons work fine and are very popular, they are really mass produced with a lot of plastic and die-cast parts that appear to be only as strong as they have to be and no more.
The Star is really good if you are going to load a lot of one cartridge. If you load a lot of several different cartridges, then the Dillon is probably a better choice. The Star does not use the standard threaded dies, but I understand the die plate can be machined out to accomodate them.

When I first got my Star I was uncertain as how to mount it. I didn't want to put a hole in a workbench for the primers. Here is a photo of my mount. How about others showing their solution? - Regards, Ray

rbwillnj,
When I first got my press, I had no idea as to how to mount it. I didn't want to drill a hole in a workbench. There is so much information that is NOT in the Star instructions. I wish the photo section of this site was up and running. New Star owners would surly benifit from photos of press mounts like yours, mine and others.
Just got 1000 Zero 185 SWC's yesterday. I will be pulling the handle today!

rbwillnj,
Nice platform! Being a machinest, I know how to work metals, but I love wood. I wish my wood working skills were better.

I index it by hand. After pulling the lever and returning it, I remove the finished round from the last station before the case feeder. I then advance the dial using both hands. One on the case just sized and one on the case where the bullet was just seated. Then I place a bullet in the case at the seating station and pull the handle again.
Here is a link to instructions emailed to me by the person I bought my Star from:
