Star Reloaders / Re: Convert STAR Progressive to load 9mm ?
« on: July 08, 2018, 06:38:23 pm »
I had to shorten the expander on the one I have set up for 9mm. The length of the expander lets it hit the bottom of the case before it expands the mouth without shortening.  Look on my old posts for more info on the conversion.

I have a crop of Brewsters my self. I was just curious as to the attachment on the one pictured. Thanks for the  info.

Lindy, What kind of indexer is that, you have mounted on the risers. I mistakenly thought it looked like a Brewster to start with. I then realized mine are not mounted that way. Thanks RS

I'm glad everything survived in one piece. Inattention can bite you. I hope you didn't take the jab personally. It was meant as a caution to use finesse. Sometimes my way with words, leaves something to be desired. Sorry.

As far as dropping the follower on primers, I would think a ham handed operator like that would have other problems with a Star as well as a ringing in the ears. You can't idiot proof anything. Idiots are so damn resourceful.

I have a piece of brazing rod with an empty shell of the type the follower is used on for a small extra weight. I have reloaded thousands of rounds and had no problem. I have the empty drilled in the primer flash hole to fit and the rod cut so the empty lacks about 1/8" reaching the housing when the primers run out as a visual of when I am getting close to being out.

Star Reloaders / Re: Hulme Case Feeder Question
« on: December 11, 2015, 02:46:54 pm »
I would go ahead and try it. I think both those cases are long enough for the linkage to work alright. The only things to think about is the aluminum top is different on the Hulme but all of them I have seen for 45ACP are also marked 38 and the top is turned the right way with the raised portion up. Pay attention to a distance from something that don't move to either the bottom or the top of the connector that holds the cam on the guide pin. Write it down and fasten it to the machine where you can find it when you return the feeder to that machine. It should be a piece of cake. There is a little adjustment on the mounting bolt and try to have the floor of the feeder level with the base so the brass slides smoothly into the shell holder.

Bruce,
Perhaps I mis-spoke. I needed a replacement cam and holder for one of my machines, so I bought one. When I installed it the stroke was off and I had to rework the part that attaches the cam to the guide pin. Evidently there is about the same difference in the offset of the cam as there is difference in shell plates as the attachment was like my universal but needed to be different to work on the progressive. I did change heights but it took moving the cam closer to the pin if I remember correctly.

I can't say but I'm a COB and unless there was a piece gone.  I would have it welded on the under side. I could be sure then that it fit.

Might this be a good time to mention that most parts are not interchangable between progressive and universal presses. For instance shell plates and Hulme case feeder cams besides the ones you mentioned.

I know you think its the Federal brass but it is something that has happened to this particular brass like the TZZ brass you also have. I have had this happen to PMC 45 Colt and some military 30-06. I'll bet this isn't what you want to hear but I have started running my brass through a universal depriming die on a single stage press. This extra step also lets me cull berdan primers and I can look at my 45acp to determine if there are any small primer brass in the mix. It also gives you the opportunity to clean the primer pocket. I guess this is one of the drawbacks to a progressive reloader. Don't you love getting to empty the shell plate of brass. Having uniform brass to to process surely makes it easier.

Loading Data & Reloading Procedures / Re: Volume measure density
« on: April 26, 2015, 10:35:58 pm »
I started off trying this. I then bought a Hornady powder measure that has the 1/2" square slide that uses the bushings like my star. I started me a spread sheet.. I made 10 or 15 different size bushings. Then I checked what the bushings threw with each powder I use. Turns out there are only a couple I ever use. The Hornady measure does come in handy when I want to load just a few, or a few dozen cases and don't want to mess up my Star set up. The actual weight and the computed weights were close enough but not exact. Before anyone asks, I haven't up dated this in years, only working off a scribbled up, update of the ones I use.

I think the bracket on the left arm is for the free loader, the one on the right arm is for a Brewster indexer.

Stars Want to Sell/Want to Buy / Re: Freeloader case feeder
« on: February 09, 2015, 10:31:06 am »
Lee makes one that works about as well as the freeloader. It is red and has 4 holes to 4 tubes. Another piece is a turret that indexes the 4 tubes to the one on the Hulme. There should be several threads on this modification. I shorten the Lee tubes to make it lower and easier to load with more room between the funnel and the ceiling. Who ever I bought the funnel from had made an adapter washer to adapt to 9mm that was held in place with an empty .22 shell. I mounted my attachment to the hooked spring holder on the top of the Star. I took the spring off, unscrewed the hook, put the holder on the screw and reinstalled. I mounted the indexer to this strap.

Star Reloaders / Re: Time frame for the Brewster indexer
« on: February 04, 2015, 10:42:01 pm »
I have Brewsters on three of my machines and don't understand what you guys are talking about. When it is set up right, it works. I can see there might be some wear on the base if you did millions of rounds but I have done thousands on these used Stars and see no problem. If set up right the effort to cycle the loader is the same with the indexer as without it. The only cases I can see you would have wear with are the rimmed cartridges. The rimless or automatic cases bear on the shell plate and can barely touch the base. I think this must be an urban legend.
