Star Reloaders / Plug part number 68

I would like to get one if anyone has a spare.  If not, David has offered to machine one for me if one of you gentlemen could provide the dimensions of same.

It is for a Progessive - NOT a Universal (68-U)

Thanks,

Don

My friend has a Progressive so I will need to have the plug made.

Dave, if you could provide me an estimate for tapping for the 11/16-24 die and the base plug I would appreciate it.  Would you produce a post style taper crimp die?  That would be easier than having the head shipped to you - and I can "surprise" him with the upgrade.

Either option will work unless you think the post crimp die is "inferior" in some way.  The only other consideration would be which taper die will work better with the auto eject that Ray Brandes produces.  It requires 3/16" clearance between the shell plate and the die base.

Thanks for helping us out.

Dave,

He has an untapped hole.

Is there a "plug" that goes into the bottom of the last station to support the round as it is gets crimped?  How is it mounted?  Do you machine them?

I would gladly work with you to get his needs addressed.  My friend is a new Bullseye shooter and he may need help in setting things up.  I prefer to purchase a new die so any "issues" are minimized for him.  Let me know what is needed and costs and I will send you a money order and my friends address.

I gave him a Star I was keeping for "spares".  This was part payment for a good deed he did for me.   He is great guy but a bit mechanically challenged.   He is used to using a Dillon and cannot seem to get the knack of using a combined seating/crimping die.

Thank you for your help/advice.

You may call me at 248-705-0658 or email at [no e-mail]@.com

A friend of mine is interested in adding a taper crimp to his Star.  What is required to add a taper crimp to a standard Star Progressive?  Is there anyone who does this?

What is the approximate cost?

Thanks,

Don

Interesting information.  It confirms that nothing like a Star will ever be built again.  It is sad.

There is a sizable market for progressive machines to load pistol calibers but we have many players already.

Those who want a Star can buy decent used machines for $400-800 and keep them running even if parts have to be made.  It becomes hard to justify $2000+ for a new one unless the supply of old ones dries up.  We are seeing a lot of Stars on Ebay because guys are getting out of shooting or as estate sales.

I have a Spolar hydraulic (purchased used for $1800) and I shoot with three other guys who have one.  It is the Star of shotshell reloaders.  I also have a PW 800+ with electric drive and case feeder.  Total of $3600 invested in shot shell reloaders and I turn out 2 flats of shells per hour without any heroics on either machine - with the PW being faster.  The shells are perfect.

At $8 a box for AA and STS's I am saving over $4 a box - the crap they sell at Wally World for $22/4 pack cannot compare to my reloads.  So, after 900 boxes (22,500) rounds the machines are paid for (but still worth at least $2500 if I sold them).  My girlfriend and I shoot 25,000 rounds of 12 ga a year.  Seems like a no brainer to me.

I have owned MEC's and a Dillon SL900.  It is like comparing an RCBS Green Machine (which I thankfully rid myself of) or a Lee progressive to a Star.  Made for the same purpose but not in the same zip code.

Star Reloaders / Re: Converting a Star Progressive to 9mm

Thank you gentlemen.  I am set up to do some light machining and a friend has a bigger set up; soturning down the shell plate is not a problem.

George, I gather that the case was well contained in the shell plate and the "straps" used on the Universal are not needed?

There is a 9mm shell plate and die set on Ebay at $251 currently.  If it does not get too ridiculous in price I may go for it.  Otherwise I will be selling one of my .38 Progressives as I have not used it in 5 years.

Is is feasible to convert a Progressive (not Universal) to load 9mm.

I have two Stars and would like to set one up for 9mm.  I have a lathe and can do light machining and I have access to a set of 9mm Star dies and a Star shell plate.

Thanks,

Not practical.

I have two Stars and two Dillon 1050's.  The Dillon will do everything you need for $1500.  A new copy of a Star will be very expensive.

Hell, new shooters don't even know what a Star is.  It will be a marketing challenge for sure. "Better than a 1050 and only XX% more!"

Used ones are snapped up at $400-800 but who will spend $2000+ for a new one?
