Thanks to all!  I now have an order into STAR for a complete STAR unit set up with accessories like my .45 ACP.
Dave Wilson had set me up with all the data and critical parameters for this cartridge with its unique requirements.
Best Regards,

I did fairly extensive testing with a Ransom Rest a few years ago on this very question as I like to know the answers.  In my testing I found that accuracy would begin to fall off below .465" and over .473" taper crimp, so I use the middle of these numbers at .469"

One factor to be aware of is that brass will spring back slightly when crimped from the initial forming of the crimp die.  Pure lead is a dead metal and has no spring.  Alloyed lead to harden it will have a very small amount of spring back, but far less than the brass.  Therefore, when we taper crimp, we are actually springing the brass AWAY from the bullet slightly.  The increase in bullet pull is primarily due to the taper itself and the purpose is to prevent the lead bullet from receding into the case upon recoil from firing previously loaded rounds.

I have had a similar, perhaps the same, as this problem if I understand it properly.  The primer punch wouldn't go down all the way as it hit the primer slide as the primer slide wouldn't go in all the way.  It was just off by a very few thousands.  I removed the primer slide and associated parts and cleaned the inmost interior portion of where the primer slide seated with a dental pick, very carefully to not scratch anything.  The blocking material was the graphite which I use to lubricate the slide had accumulated over the years and had built up sufficiently to stop the slide short of lining up with the primer punch as it came down as the handle was worked.  I encountered this same fault with a friend's STAR when he had the same problem and couldn't fix it with normal cleaning.
