Title: Having difficulty re-sizing 9 mm cases on my Star.
Post by: Jim Smith on February 03, 2004, 08:48:36 pm
Recently I set up my Star to reload 9mm (I've reloaded .45's and 38's for years). It's a real physical challenge to re-size and de-prime these 9 mm cases. Have tried several different kinds of cleaned cases and they are all tough to re-size. Have lubed a few cases and it goes some what better. Has any one had similar a problem?

Jim
I don't have an answer only suggestions. My Star with 9mm works fine.
Take some of your hard to size brass to a friends and ask  to resize it on his press see if you can feel a difference.
Try some wax in die and polish it.
Try and measure your die at the tip then measure your friends die in the same location.
Are you sure you are using a 9mm shell plate?
Let me know how you make out.

just as a reminder/question
is there a slight chance you have some 9-18 cases instead of 9-19 or sizer dies mixed up ?
also for my info are 9-18 also a tapered case?

How is the sizing problem? I had another idea, can you get a hold of a 9mm that has already been sized? Try it in your press to see if that works smoothly. Maybe there is a die problem. Let us know.

Are you still having problems sizing those 9mm cases.

I have loaded 9mm with no problems, but sometimes they are a little harder to resize, just like Nickle 357 Mag or 44 Mag cases, even with the carbide die.

I just lube the cases, either with Hornady Spray lube, or I lube say 10 to 20% of the cases with Imperial Sizing Die Wax, now sold as Redding Sizing Die Wax, and mix them in with the rest of the cases...

Makes "pulling the handle" much easier...

Greetings,

Somewhere in some Star literature they suggested using Lanolin to lube the 9mm brass to reduce the sizing forces.

The recommendation was this, wet your fingertips with Lanolin and "stir" the brass with your hand. This would place just enough lube on the cases without making a mess.

Lanolin can be found at the local Pharmacy. Ask for USP. (US Pure) A tube will last a long time.

Cheers,

Dave
