Title: primer feeder misalignment

The primer slide on my star.38 universal does not seem to align properly,it seems the primer catches on one side of the case during seating and then snaps into position leaving a visible scuff or bend on the edge of the primer.There does not appear to be any appreciable wear on any of the affecting parts.I've changed the primer slide itself which didn't cure anything.

Take the slide out and clean the slot that the slide runs in even the rear thet is in the center post.

I have thourouly cleaned it to no avail.

The angle lever cam (# 49U)  can be bent slightly in or out to adjust the travel of the primer slide which should be just touching the center post with the head all the way to the bottom of its travel.

Bending the cam is exceedingly difficult. Heat treated very hard.

It easier to make a square thin tapered shim behind it. Primer slide should juuuust barely touch the center post at its
furthest travel.

Hi Jerry
On page 4 of the Instruction Manual for the Star reloader is the following Paragraph:

                               NOTE: ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT
                   To adjust primer slide bend the cam (that operates the
                   angle lever) either in or out as necessary to cause the inner
                   end of primer slide to just touch the main column without
                   any strain on the angle lever when the handle is all the
                   way down.

I use a brass hammer to strike and bend the cam to make this adjustment. and never found it to be a problem.
I am always open to other methods and next time intend to try the shims as it sounds like a good Idea.

The angle lever cam is case hardened, not hardened throughout.  i.e. hard on the outside to resist wear, softer on the inside to allow for adjustment.  Similar to Lindy, I use a lead mallet to adjust it.

I did come across a Phelps angle lever cam that was over hardened, and one moderate tap with the lead hammer and it snapped in two.......but never had a problem adjusting a Star angle lever cam.

Is it possible that the angle cam you have is from a progressive and being used on a universal? I have run into this issue as well.

I was sucessful by putting a piece of brass tubing over the pin on the primer slide that the cam bears against.Corresponding sizes of brass tubing can be stacked on for added thickness

Whoa there!  Putting a piece of brass tubing on that pin means that the primer slide will be moved further inward by the amount of the tubing thickness.  It will bottom out sooner.  Is that what you want?

I use a large box end wrench to adjust the angle.   Jep
