Title: Star for a .30 Cal Carbine?

BRAND new to the board.
Would a Star have ever been configured for a .30 Carbine load?
Are there any Star users in the Atlanta area that would be willing to look over a press and help a newbie figure this thing out?

A Star Universal could be configured for 30 Carbine, Star offered shell plates and dies for 30 Carbine.  Early Stars used steel sizing dies.  Later they used Lifetyme carbide sizing dies.   In most cases the steel sizing dies have been replaced with carbide dies, but you might come accross one that still has a steel sizing die.

Here's a pic of the machine. Safe to say you can use either steel or carbide dies in a Universal?
I'm also still trying to determine if this is a Universal or a Progressive machine? Can you determine that without removing the shell plate?

It is a Star "Universal" model produced in 1965 or later.   It has a Lifetyme carbide sizing die.   I can't see if it has a taper crimp die installed, or if the taper crimp station has a 3/8" hole, or is drilled and taped for a 11/16-24

From what I can see in the picture, it looks like a decent machine.

Note: For 30 Carbine, even though it has a carbide die installed, it's best to use some case lube.

Greetings,

I have machined 30 Carbine die sets in the past. In fact, I have a request in now for a new set.

I am a bit puzzled, is the Star pictured equipped with 30 Carbine dies? Or, are you wondering about converting to 30 Carbine?

As to value, do a search on eBay for completed auctions. I have not seen a 30 Carbine sold lately; but, it might bring a good price as it is not too common. Best scenario is to get two beered up bidders after the same tool.

The Star currently has .38 Special dies in it. Am I getting into a major piece of work by converting this machine to 30 carbine?
