Anybody have a Fast / Easy method of Bluing or Blacking the Loader Parts.. ??? :-[ ???

i.e. The Steel Base........

I use it on occasion to touch up small parts.

It is not "quick and easy" ; but, does leave a nice color.

Best way is to locate someone locally that does black oxiding which is the industrial equivalent to bluing in the gun world.

I got 2 Star steel bases that need to be done....If I take it to someone that does that, will I/should I take the Column out
of the base... ???

Greetings Doc,

It would be best to disassemble the parts into individual components.

If left as an assembly, the black oxiding salts will penetrate into every crevice and over time a white bloom will continue to grow at the joints. You can try placing the newly blackened parts into a tub of boiling water for a while to leach out the salts.

I have never tried to separate a steel base from the column.  How would you go about getting them apart.   I assume it would require a hydraulic press?   

Also, the position of the shaft keyway relative to the base is critical.   How do you go about making certain it's put back together correctly.
I know that some shaft/base combos are drilled for a pin to index the relative positions, but I have seen others that are not.

I comprehend that Bruce, that's why I brought it up, I'd never try that.............Would doing that oxide finish mess up the column &
the Bronze primer slide housing..?????   or doing the Brownell OXPHO finish........I believe I have a bottle of that......... ::)

From what I understand Star had a fixture to assemble those parts. I wonder if Bill Cunningham would know.
