Today I made a lengthy road-trip to visit fellow forum member Mike V and acquire my second Star. Recently, I had agreed to purchase his Progressive press in order to better support my DR (Distinguished Revolver) efforts. Mike is a wonderfully nice gentleman and his press was beautifully preserved.
While I was organizing some spare parts that came with this press, I took the opportunity to review a number of spare parts and odds & ends from my first Universal purchase.
Included in those parts is what I believe to be a .38 caliber post-hole taper crimp die (for tool heads with the 3/8" smooth hole). But aside from "Patent Pending" on the face of the circular-shaped knurled nut, I cannot discern any identifying information. Can anyone point me to some examples of these for comparison purposes? (I will work on posting pictures...)

Before I can get my own pictures up, I was hoping to see pictures of other crimp dies designed for the smooth tool head hole. I was hoping to compare those pictures with my own and to identify mine. And ultimately, this research will prepare me to sell it to someone else who may need/want it.

Mike hit the jackpot! Mine looks just about identical, including that circular-shaped knurled lock-nut. (Mike, do you know what the brand/origin of your die is?)

There is only 'Pat. Pending' on the large round nut. I picked it up on line.
I really like Dave's better and for what its worth I would send the head to
Dave to be drilled and tapped(which I have done), his work is outstanding.

Agreed, Mike. Dave has already drilled and tapped my a tool head for me, and it holds one of his custom taper crimp dies as well. (Great work, Dave.) Thanks for your help to I.D. this die, Mike, but its manufacturer will continue to be a mystery.

I have lost the American Rifleman article that was written by John Giles, of Odessa, Florida. Within it, he claims to have invented the taper crimp die and licensed someone, who I obviously cannot recall, to fabricate them.
If I ever locate the magazine, I will copy and post the article.

Next, the post-hole taper crimp die -- if that's what it is... Note the micrometer reading. It's not .38 Special, not is it .45ACP.

I would venture a guess that the die is 38 Special. Your caliipers may be picking up the taper.
