#74 Thrust Nut Clamping Screw

Anybody know the thread & pitch of #74 Screw

Greetings Doc,

The thread size is 1/4-28. The screw is fully hardened and will not be available in the local supply house. The head of the screw is also non-standard.

Would McMaster-Carr have it..??
One of the Shell Plate Thrust Nuts I have has a hole drilled through the Head of the Thrust Nut Screw....

On another note, I need a #80 Column Shaft Nut..Have 1 handy..??

I had a problem of with the slots on the #74 clamping screws getting buggerd-up , went to the local Hardware store and picked up a 6-pack of Socket Cap Screws,
1/4"- 28 X 3/4 , ( $0.69 ) The head will not fit the the hole in the trust nut but its a simple thing to correct,  I chucked the screw into my drill press, took a file to
the head  of the screw and turned it down to fit the hole.  now I can  use an allen wrench to tighten the nut in place. Took about five minutes. works great !
That's My bit of trivia for today, hope it helps someone.

Modifying a Socket Head screw will work.

If you want to keep the machine original, I can machine a replica screw.

Did Star sell some original machines with a socket head screw?

My machine (originally my fathers) was purchased new in mid 1960s and had a regular screw for flat blade screwdriver. He picked up a second machine in the mid 1980s that was made in early to mid 1970s from an original owner and friend who was retiring. The original owner only had one head (45acp) and never changed it or shellplate. It had a socket head screw. There are no signs of the socket screw head being modified and it shares the same outer dimensions of the regular screw. Also same dark blue/black color, no visible machine marks.

I have yet to see a Star with a socket head screw in the thrust nut, but many Phelps have them. 

Even if he didn't change shell plates, one would assume that your fathers friend must have had the machine apart to clean it at some point.   It's easy to loose a part.........................right Doc?
