It would be nice to have a close up photo of the parts in question.

Star Reloaders / Keeping Machine Clean
« on: December 25, 2010, 08:44:32 pm »
Greetings,

I used to tumble my brass in corn cobs or walnut shells. The little pieces would stick in the primer holes and work their way into the shell plate and primer punch of my Star along with other primer grit from the decapping operation. Now I decap all my brass on a single stage machine and wet wash it. The film from the Palmolive dish soap I use for cleaning leaves a faint residue that makes sizing and flaring go rather easy.  Additionally, the wet washing has a tendency to clean the primer pockets of crud.

This method has left my machine much cleaner and I only need to service it during caliber changes.

Cheers,

Dave Wilson

Greetings Don,

I sent an email to your AOL (America off Line) account and it was denied.

Please click on the little envelope under my fc60 moniker and send me a message to my personal email account.

I should be able to provide you with a working solution.

Bruce has a spare 67U plug for sale.

Cheers,

Dave Wilson

Greetings,

Locate a Star Parts List. Item #67U is a bushing that allows a rimmed case to drop though the base into a collection box. For crimping at this station, you need a #68U, Shell Floor Base Plug, which is solid. You must now remove the cartridge manually.

Something I forgot. Your friends machine may be the Progressive, 38 Special only, model. Look at the sizing, powder drop, and seating stations. If there is a small metal strap held on with a small machine screw the machine would be a Universal, which is convertible to other calibers.

Nonetheless, myself, or one of the other forum members, should be able to machine/supply you with needed parts.

Cheers,

Dave

Your friend needs to examine the last station of the tool head and see if it has a plain 3/8" hole or is tapped for a 11/16-24 die.

If it has a hole, you need to ask around for a "Post Style Taper Crimp Die".

This is a link to what a Post style die looks like....

Should it be tapped 11/16-24, I can machine a new die for $47.00, which includes shipping. You can also post a wanted request on this website as many folks have spare parts to sell or trade.

Greetings,

I also use the Pacific Bushings in my Star. Attached is a PDF of the equivalent VMD (Volume Measured Density) that Lee loader use to calculate bushings. I also have it in an Excel spreadsheet if anyone is interested.

Star Reloaders / Powder Charge Consistency
« on: September 10, 2010, 01:03:12 pm »
Greetings,

I load 32 Long WadCutter and my charges range from 1.2 through 2.0 grains of Bullseye. I use fixed bushings in a #0 (1/4" thick) bar with good consistency. I was never able to meter small charges with flake powders, such as Unique, Red Dot, Clays, etc, with any success.

If you stick to one of the ball powders, the small adjustable bar should suit your needs.

To test your setup, meter out ten charges and weigh the total. Then repeat this process several times and observe the variation. It should repeat within +/-0.2 grains for the total ten charges. Be sure to use the same cadence when you operate the machine.

Star Reloaders / Re: Primer Bushing Thread Size

Greetings,

I measured Item #54, Steel Ball Plug, and find it to be a 9/16-27 UNS thread. Sure glad my lathe cuts a 27 thread!

Star Reloaders / Primer Bushing Thread Size
« on: September 08, 2010, 02:24:44 pm »
Greetings,

Does any one know the proper thread size for the Primer Punch Bushing, Item #26?

My best guess so far is 0.400-27 UNS, based on the three that I measured.

Nothing comes close in the Machinery Handbook.

I suspect buying a tap would be a major challenge.

Greetings Wayne,

On the Star Parts List, the item you seek is #16, Shell Expander Plug. If you need one for 45 ACP or 38 Special, I am sure someone on the list has a spare. Should you need one for a different caliber, I can machine one for you. I need to know the bullet length and diameter.

I would suggest using the Star 1/2-27 threaded expander.

Star Reloaders / Re: MA Systems Case Feeder --- Need Help
« on: September 05, 2010, 11:22:05 am »
Greetings Wayne,

The photos helped a lot! I now know my axle is homemade (a cheap bolt). I will now machine a proper looking axle from piece of hardened steel.

The spring is a complicated piece of work. I will call MA Systems and order a correctly made one.

I suspect the screw is photo #3 is the 4-48 screw you mentioned? My housing only has one screw near the top that clamps the case tube guide.

Again, many thanks.

Cheers,

Dave
