Star Reloaders / Re: Powder Spout Sizes
« on: November 06, 2013, 12:29:08 pm »
Greetings,

The Star Parts list show only one number (#31) for the spout. However, for loading the 32 caliber and 30 Carbine, you definitely need one with a smaller diameter and Star did ship smaller ones as I have some.

Regarding the length, I did machine a longer one for a friend to load 32 ACP to avoid the powder spillage you are experiencing.

Should you be unable to locate a used one on the Forum, I can machine one for you.

Cheers,

Dave

Star Lubricator & Resizers / Re: Have sizer, don't have experience
« on: October 13, 2013, 12:16:13 pm »
Greetings,

First, mount the greaser to a sturdy bench that is comfortable to work from.

Next, determine what kind of lube is in the machine. 50/50 NRA lube is soft and works without heat. Other lubes may require heat so that they will flow through the greaser mechanism.

Do not force the operating handle. If it does not operate freely, something is not right.

Measure the groove diameter of your 9mm pistol and order a die 0.001' larger.

You might be able to locate genuine parts from Forum members.

Let us know when you are ready for the next lesson.

Cheers,

Dave

Greetings,

I just received some parts from Bill Cunningham.

Give him a try. You will be getting genuine Star parts.

Note that the price sheet is out of date.

I checked my new price sheet and the #57 is $15.00.

Also had a 32 ACP and 475 Wildey tool head bought about the same time.

Greetings Ken,

If you have the original sales invoice, it would be great history to scan them and post them on the Forum.

Greetings,

The Article was copied from the December 1992 American Rifleman.

I tried to find the Patent for the Taper Crimp Die but was unsuccessful.

Greetings,

The Star Seating die has a Roll Crimp profile machined into the die body.

Roll Crimping works fine if all your brass is the same length.

Most shooters have opted for Taper Crimping at the last station as a separate operation.

Greetings,

I have machined them in the past.

Looking in my parts box I have one remaining.

If you need only one, great. If you need more than one, I can add you to my list of projects.

Contact me via private email (not the Forum message) for pricing

Star History / Re: Every Star has a Story

Greetings,

Great trade!!! You did very well.

Regarding aftermarket accessories, such as a powder drain. The thread of the powder supply tube is tapered, not straight, with a 27 pitch thread. Most aftermarket parts do not have the tapered thread. They may screw in partway; but, over time, they will damage the powder slide top plate.

Be wary and ask questions.

Dave

Greetings,

I have a 38 S&W shell plate. Not the 38 Special; but, 38 S&W. The 38 S&W case diameter is slightly larger than a 38 Special.

With a set of 38 Super/ACP dies, you would be all set.

Only question is whether or not the 38 S&W shell plate will fit into your Progressive machine. I only have Universals, so I cannot test.

Regarding the 327 or similar cases, I would not think a Progressive would be a good choice. The cases would have a tendency to migrate to the outer edge out of the axis of the dies. I foresee several cases getting squashed or having large dents where the die comes down on a case that is not in alignment.

Dave

Greetings,

The #16 Shell Expander Plug may interfere with the brass powder bar when you adjust it from 38 Special to 357 Magnum.

Greetings,

The seating die "usually" has a roll crimp profile in it. I prefer to crimp at the last station as a separate operation. Buy a spare seating/crimping die and remove the seating stem.

Greetings,

If unable to locate a #42 Safety Cam Screw, I can machine one for you.

Write to Bill Cunningham, the fellow who bought the Star inventory, to see if he has any original parts available.

Cheers,

Dave
