Greetings,

With regards to primer tube maintenance, I find a 0.177" "Bore Snake" works well for cleaning the tubes. Especially tubes that I buy off eBay and Gun Shows that have been sitting for a long time.

Alternately, a double ended "Q-Tip" wet with 99% Isopropyl alcohol pushed through with the following rod also cleans out a lot of "gunk".

Cheers,

Dave

Greetings,

The 1/2" "fine thread" is a non-standard thread. It is actually 1/2-27 (twenty seven).

Bruce Williams of Star Machine Works should have plenty of lock nuts if you need them.

Magma Engineering bought the Star Greaser line and currently make parts and dies.

Of course, it is always nice to buy second hand Genuine Star dies and punches.

Cheers,

Dave

Star Reloaders / Re: STAR BASE OR NOT?
« on: November 25, 2015, 08:21:04 pm »
Greetings,

Looks like the one offered by "Ricketts" on eBay.

It "might" be an original Star that was "vandalized" by a previous owner to attach a case feed of some sort. The tool head has the Star trademark.

All the shell plate locking rings I have seen from Star were knurled. This one has no knurling.

Ricketts does not answer questions via eBay, so one could take a chance and buy it and if not satisfied, send it back via eBay.

I have been outbid, so the rest of you do not have to worry about me raising the price.

Happy bidding,

Dave

Stars Want to Sell/Want to Buy / Re: Star Parts on eBay

No need to worry, Star Machine Works LLC is a real business and all of my revenues regardless of the source are reported on both my Federal and State taxes.  You do the same right?

Bruce, what about the "Jersey Mob"? How much does Protection set you back?

Cheers,

Dave

Stars Want to Sell/Want to Buy / Re: Powder cutoff for star reloaders
« on: October 25, 2015, 11:33:24 am »
Greetings,

I contacted "courageca" on eBay regarding his product. He freely stated that the thread size was not original Star.

I would use great caution purchasing aftermarket items that do not have the proper threads.

With kind regards,

Dave

Star Reloaders / Re: Powder Slides Identification

Greetings,

The top one, with only one chamfer, is similar to all the Phelps slides I have encountered.

Both work in my machines.

Dave

Greetings,

Used to have the same problem using CCI primers.

Look at the end of the decapping pin and see if it is too pointed. Try putting a blunter radius on the end with a stone.

The existing pin "may" be piercing the primer like an arrow. Federal primers seem to have softer/thinner metal.

Dave

Greetings Mr. Ellis,

My compliments. A total of nine Star machines!!!

Yes, I do machine dies and shell plates for the Star Reloaders. It is a retirement project and I am not very fast at what I do. Contact me off line with your wish list and I will reply with what I can offer.

Meantime, contact Bruce Williams and Star Machine Works of New Jersey. He recently purchased the Star company and has quite an inventory of repair parts and dies.

Greetings,

It appears that the powder slide is an adjustable design. Is my assumption correct?

Star History / Re: Where star left off and Dillin begins
« on: August 27, 2015, 11:44:49 am »
Greetings,

Dillon does offer good Customer support. They will supply broken or lost parts generally at no cost to the user.

However, try to get Dillon to make a custom part for your machine. Most of the time they do not even respond.

Fortunately, Bruce Williams, of Star Machine Works, will try to fabricate the custom part to the customers needs.

Dave

Star Reloaders / Strap Adustment
« on: July 11, 2015, 11:59:56 am »
Greetings,

The various caliber shell plates vary in outside diameter. A little math leads one to believe that the OD is tangent to the case OD.

So, rotate the shell plate 1/12 of a turn. The detent ball should be positioned under a case cutout, not the round 3/8" indexing hole.

Insert the strap with the upper set screw backed off so it does not touch.

Next, lightly tighten the Fillister head screw so the strap just touches the rim of the shell plate.

Last, tighten the upper set screw to snug up the strap and leave a wee bit of clearance with the shell plate.

Test the adjustment with an empty case and you should be spot on.

Cheers,

Dave

Star Reloaders / Re: Reloading bench ideas?
« on: May 17, 2015, 12:01:11 pm »
Greetings John,

I covered my bench top with Formica. After several years it has a chip here and there; but, is holding up.

The lag bolts are handy as I have moved my bench at least three times.

Shoot well on Father's Day.

Cheers,

Dave

Star Reloaders / Re: Adjustable Powder Bar
« on: May 11, 2015, 06:21:46 pm »
Greetings,

When you say "bridge" are you referring to the folded sheet metal devices RCBS and others place in their hoppers?

If so, Star already has one, if it is original.

Look closely at the Star hopper. If it is clear plastic, you will see a threaded brass snout and just above is an Aluminum disk with a hole about 3/8" diameter. This is the "bridge" that Star used to maintain a consistent powder head pressure.

Dave

Loading Data & Reloading Procedures / Re: Volume measure density
« on: April 27, 2015, 10:43:47 am »
Greetings,

The Lee chart is a good "reference" as powder lots do vary.

I machined a set of bushings in 0.005cc increments.

Next, I weigh my powder with two or three bushings and calculate the actual VMD and write that number on the powder container.

When changing powder weights, this method will get you within +/- 0.005cc.

For loads you use a lot, just write the number of the bushing last used.

By the way, some powders react to the weather causing slight variations in weight with the same bushing. i.e. rainy day vs. dry sunny day. I load a lot of 32 Wadcutter ammo and I notice it more since I am throwing 1.30-1.80 grains of powder.

Cheers,

Dave
