Star Reloaders / Powder Hopper Thread Size
« on: September 18, 2011, 12:01:52 pm »
Greetings,

A friend wrote to me and asked the thread size of items #32 (Powder Magazine) and #70 (Powder Slide Housing Cover). Since I have never machined any of  these parts I went to the shop to measure them. At first, it appeared to be a 9/16-27 thread. Bastard size, of course, to stay with Star tradition. Closer examination of a Powder magazine revealed that the thread is actually tapered, not straight. Aha, I thought. A pipe thread. Consulting my Machinery's Handbook I found no such thread in the National Pipe Thread section. Further reading lead me to a section on Dryseal Pipe Threads. Two days later of searching the Internet, I found what I think is the answer. It is a Dryseal Taper Pipe Thread, Fine, F-PTF. The actual size appears to be a 1/4-27.

I have no idea what language the link is written. However, the PDF for J476 is in English. You will find the specifications near the very end of the document.

My next adventure is to locate a tap of this size. So far my Internet search has been null. I will resort to contacting the various tap manufactures for a source. I dread finding out what such a specialized tap will cost.

The quest continues....

Star History / Lifetyme Dies - History
« on: August 30, 2011, 07:37:09 pm »
Greetings,

Just did an unsuccessful "Google" search for Lifetyme dies.

Does anyone know the history of them?

Such as, was the company named Lifetyme; or, was it a brand?

Perhaps someone has an original brochure or price sheet they could scan and post?

Cheers,

Dave

Star Reloaders / Mystery Press
« on: May 24, 2011, 03:27:42 pm »
Greetings,

Saw a post on another forum seeking help identifying a progressive reloading press.

Here is a link to the photo.

http://mysite.verizon.net/vzey9bmt/mysterypress.jpg

More data from the owner....

I have a "Mystery Press" I need help Identifying.  Here is what I know
from my observations:

     * It is a three stage LINEAR press
     * It uses 5/8 diameter dies (One is a star die, the others have no
       identifying marks)
     * Currently setup for .38 Special

I am particularly interested in any information on adjusting it.
Especially the powder drop mechanism.

He wrote to CH and they said it was not their's.

Is it possible an early Star?

Dave

Star Reloaders / Safety Cam Modification For Taper Crimp Die
« on: May 19, 2011, 01:07:12 pm »
Greetings,

I vaguely remember a photo showing a modification to the Safety Cam to allow function of a Crimp Die in the last station.

Am I imagining such a document? Perhaps someone out there will have a copy of the document, if it indeed exists, and post a copy for all to see.

I removed all my Safety Cams thirty years ago for what reason I cannot recall.

Star Reloaders / Drill Jig For Hulme Case Feeder

Does anyone have one of these tools laying about in their parts kit?

I have a friend that needs a hole drilled and tapped in his older machine.

Star Reloaders / So-Mar Indexer
« on: March 21, 2011, 01:35:50 pm »
Greetings,

I was reflecting on a 1972 Gil Hebard catalog and saw an advertisement for a "So-Mar" Indexer.

Does anyone on the list own one?

I would like to learn more about this device. Hopefully some photos and a scan of the instruction manual could become available?

Cheers,

Dave Wilson

PS   So-Mar Indexer only. Please do not reply with other brands.

Greetings,

This post is directed to those that own the Star Progressive, not Universal.

Does the #68 plug fit into the base in the same manner as the #68U fits the Universal?

From what I have heard, not seen, is the Progressive uses a smaller diameter plug.

I look forward to hearing from all that can help. (Photos are good, too!)

Star Reloaders / Comparison of Genuine Star Dies with Wilson Replica Dies
« on: January 18, 2011, 08:11:21 pm »
Greetings All,

I just finished up a set of Replica Dies for Art in Caliber 44 Special/Magnum. I would like to post an image comparing the two dies sets side by side. The top row is a set of Genuine Star Dies I picked up some time ago. The bottom row is a set of Wilson Replica dies that I just finished. Shown are the sizing/decapping die, the expander plug, the seating/crimping die with bullet seater, and an additional Taper Crimp die that was not part of my original Star die set.

I post these so folks can see the effort that goes into keeping these machines as original as possible. I can distinguish the differences of the two dies laid out side by side. The untrained eye will find it a little more challenging. Star used a die to cut the external threads while I single point thread them on my lathe. Also notice that Star used a different font for stamping "44" on the die body. The roll stamping of the Lifetyme die would be very expensive to duplicate. It is very attractive and well made.

Jam nuts may seem like a simple item. Not so. Look carefully at your Star machine and you will notice that the jam nuts have a 0.015" circular bearing face on the locking side. This is somewhat detailed in the Machinery Handbook but the Star parts are not a standard of the industry. All the nuts I produce have this feature. Another item where Star separates themselves from the others.

Thanks to Art and all the others that have asked me to machine dies and parts for them. Since I have something to keep myself busy now the folks at the local Jail wonder if I moved out of the area.

Do not forget that Bruce M  and Richard D machine shell plates, primer tubes, and other goodies to keep these fine machines up and running.

Cheers,

Star Reloaders / Primer Bushing Thread Size
« on: September 08, 2010, 02:24:44 pm »
Greetings,

Does any one know the proper thread size for the Primer Punch Bushing, Item #26?

My best guess so far is 0.400-27 UNS, based on the three that I measured.

Nothing comes close in the Machinery Handbook.

I suspect buying a tap would be a major challenge.

Star Reloaders / MA Systems Case Feeder --- Need Help
« on: September 03, 2010, 12:14:51 pm »
Greetings,

I have an MA Systems "Easy Case Feeder" that came with a used press. I do not think the parts are original as it looks rather "Mickey Mouse" as assembled.

Does anyone have one of these that is up and running? I would like to see some detailed photos of a proper one before I call MA Systems to ask for parts. Perhaps I can machine the parts myself.

Areas of interest are the axle and the spring that pushes the Nylon case feed block.

With kind regards,

Dave Wilson

Star Lubricator & Resizers / Automatic Bullet Feeder??? What is this?
« on: July 05, 2010, 05:37:26 pm »
Greetings,

I got this in a box of parts. It looks unused and I can only guess it is a bullet feeder for the Star Greaser. Those who know what it is and who makes it, please respond. More important, an Owner Manual would be great.

Thanks, in advance,

Dave Wilson
