Star Reloaders / Star Adapter
« on: December 07, 2020, 09:08:32 am »
Found a Star Adapter listed for sale on Ebay.
Not really sure what it adapts.  Maybe a case feeder?

Tried to upload a picture but file size was too large.
Link may not work, but copy and paste in browser should.

I too have loaded coated bullets. Specifically S&S. I found they loaded the same as jacketed heads, without having to change the belling. (It is slightly larger than loading lead) Whether it changes for you would depend how much of a bell your original setting was.
Otherwise loading was without any problems or issues, and finished rounds were of expected Star quality!
Good luck shooting!

Stars Want to Sell/Want to Buy / Re: 45acp Universal for sale

An inquiry was made about whether he had moulds. The owner stopped casting in the late 1960's, and no longer  has his moulds, only the electric lead pot. Other Bullseye related items were 2 gun boxes (1 Pachmyer, 1 other) a 60s Colt 1911 w/Bo-mar rib accurized by pistolsmith Al Dinan of Ct., as well as a couple of High Standard pistols.
Regards to all.

Being listed here for forum members before going the Ebay route.
I am selling this reloader for an elderly shooter who is beginning to liquidate his shooting equipment.  He would like to clear $ 300.00 so is asking $ 340.00 which will include shipping to Continental United States. Will be well packaged and protected. Loader is located in New York State. It has been sitting and not been used for a few years, but is in good condition. Minor rust patina as can be seen in pictures, but function is smooth. Set up to load .45acp, and includes a 3.5 grain powder bar. Has Lifetyme dies. With the exception of the safety cam, all parts are present. The oversize powder tube has a homemade powder shutoff. It certainly does look homemade, but functions and does not leak. Original Brass primer tube and primer follower. Also includes two large primer pickup tubes, pictured with powder tube to estimate size.  I have a few other pictures but cannot resize small enough  to list here.  Check, Money Order, Paypal all accepted. Whichever is easier for buyer.  I can be contacted via forum or e-mail to  KennBoyd AT aol DOT com.
Thanks.

Star Reloaders / Re: .223 Super Stars Conversions
« on: September 20, 2020, 01:35:36 pm »
I do not own one, but believe you are correct on the parts difference including shell plate,  and yes 1,850 is a lot. They are however rare, and few and far between. The value is set by the seller in hopes of a buyer. Interesting to see what/if it really sells and for what.

Makes we wonder what my wife/children will be able to sell my Star's for in the distant future. With the improvement of progressive reloading (Dillon 750 for example) who will want to buy a Star that has not been produced in what is approaching 30 years.

Bruce Williams might jump in here, but I would suspect no one is making clones or copies as it is to a very small and costly market. Much the same reason no one is making a current Star reloader.  With such a small market, one has to wonder how many they would need to sell to cover development and production costs as well as realize a profit. The market is much smaller than just all Star owners. I would suspect that many Star owners reload many rifle calibers beyond .223 that these cannot be done on the Star.

I for one load .223, as well as 30-06 and 308. all on a Dillon. While I would certainly like to reload .223 on my Star, I would still need another option. And at 1,850, I could buy a lot of components. (If you could fine them these days in any quantity).

My 2 cents
Regards

Kenn

Adjustable powder slides can sometimes be found on Ebay.
You may also want to ask Bruce, he may have one of the older Hoags out there in his shop.

Another alternative is Rich Daniels in Ct.  On this site as    BarrelTester.   He fabricates them as needed. I have one from him and it is a quality piece.

Interesting pictures.
Anyone have any idea of year they were taken?

I am only guessing but, glossy grain B&W and clothing suggest late 60s, early 70s?

Agree with Bruce, would be nice to see more.

The issue was corrected by an adjustment of the primer push (#44) rod. I adjusted it up less than 1/8 turn. The primers are now seating just slighting less (.001 - .002) than full flush, but within specs, and are now functioning in the one gun that had ignition issues.

When I first had the problem, I looked at the potential causes. I had checked the primer push rod before dis-assembly and re-assembly prior to cleaning and it was not loose at all. Since the adjusting nut on the push rod was tight, I did not suspect it, and I moved on to checking for debris and found none. I then looked at the length of the primer punch which was within specs.  I appreciate the comment from forum members to provide that second opinion.

I have been using this Star since my father bought it new in 1965. It never ceases to amaze me, the quality of construction, that limits issues. Because of Star quality, it is relatively easy to reduce the cause of problems to one of two minor things and focus on them.  And having the resources form the member of this forum is like having a second set of eyes.

 Thank you Bruce and Lindy!

Took the machine apart. Nothing found damaged, bent, impacted, etc. Cleaned it all up, and reassembled.
Also measured the primer punch and it is the same length (.94) as another small punch as well as a large punch.
Re-installed the .9mm head. Primer is till not seating as flush as factory ammo.

Used Winchester SPP primers. Have some Federal and CCI, so will try another brand, but would not expect there to be a height variance of that significance.

Maybe next option is to install the .39spl head and see if that presents the same issue.

Thanks Bruce

I can rule out the expander, as I tried it without any cases in any stations except for priming.
Nothing changed or is altered that I can see in the primer punch rod, so perhaps it is the shell plate.
As I am going to dis-assemble and re-assemble, I will be attentive to the shell plate when I retighten.

Hope it is something as simple as that!

Kenn

Put the 9mm head back on the Star. Adjusted the seating die. Noticed that the primers were not seating flush with the case and were a few thousands recessed. Loaded 50 as they were and found they worked in a Springfield 1911, but not all worked in a Kahr carry gun. Not even an indication of a light hit on the primer from those that did not work.

Head is mounted correctly, shell plate is installed correctly, as well as primer seat. Machine is over 50 years old, and I have never experienced this problem before in any of the four calibers I reload. Cannot fathom that adjustment of the seating die would be contributing to this problem. What say members?

Plan to dis-assemble and re-assemble the press and head to see if I can determine what the problem might be.

Thought perhaps a slight difference in primer seat height ?  I Intend to measure with another before I would consider shortening, but have generally found minimal if any variance in Star parts. Is possible the primer seat could be an aftermarket that came with the 9mm toolhead and be too long? I do not recall this issue the last time I reloaded 9mm (2018 )Maybe will have to get another from RBWillNJ just in case.

Will not have time to do anything before Saturday, so thought I might get some feedback and suggestions.

Could it be the difference of flat versus oval primer punch?
