If it has shell holders it is the Universal, if not Progressive.

As for the last station, you do not have to make a special extractor.. There is a commercial case kicker made that is affordable and works very well if you want one. It is simple design and simple install, and does not require modification to your press. Attaches at the safety cam support.  Info can be found on this forum.

I do not use one, but many do.  I remove the rounds one at a time as they are loaded while placing the head on the case at the seating die. Time impact negligible, but slightly more labor intensive, but it also gives me a chance to feel the finished round for defects etc.

Good luck!

Loading Data & Reloading Procedures / Re: Adjustable charge bars
« on: February 22, 2015, 04:59:15 pm »
I have used adjustable charge bars for determining a load I liked. Once found, I use a fixed charge bar.

I have used the adjustable, (1 Hoag, 1 Barreltester) to load up to a box at a time, and the loads have been just as consistent as a fixed bar. There has been some variance, but minimal at best that I attribute to the powder.

When I first used the adjustable, I weighed the charge every ten rounds. Now I only weigh the first 3 in the beginning and the last 3 at the end to insure consistency.

I have both an original Hoag as well as one that was made by Rich Daniels "Barreltester" on this site.
Both are well made, and both work very well. I have utilized them to determine a load. Once determined, I then convert to a fixed charge bar.

Stars Want to Sell/Want to Buy / Re: hulme case feeders (clones)

I have a Hulme on one of my machines that was set-up for .45 for loading 230 grains RN when I was pursuing distinguished. I have not used that machine since I legged out. It came on the machine so made use of it.  They are handy, but for me, I do not find it a need to have item and do not have it on my others.
I also make it a habit of looking at the brass before inserting it, (ie: small primer, other issue) and do not feel I am losing time or productivity.

Good luck with them.

Star History / Re: Star ammo?

They are not related. Star in Indianapolis began to provide bullets in the 1980s. I still have a few thousand of the .38 148gr HBWC, and .45 200gr SWC bullets. Both bullets shot very well.  Champions Shooters Supply was one of their distributors at Camp Perry. I always picked them up at Perry rather than have them shipped to lesson the possibility of damage. The Indianapolis Star company is no longer in business. I cannot recall the last year they could be found at Camp Perry but is was sometime ago.

Last time I was out in Albuquerque for NRA NPSC, I stopped in at Ron Petersons Guns and inquired about the Stars he was supposed to have. The owner was not in the store and the 'senior' employee I spoke with had no idea what-so-ever. I postulated that Mr. Peterson had them in his home.

Nice machine.

Only had chance to view a few in-lines, and none were any where near functional.
Good luck.

If only pistol, it should be fine.

Give the 550 consideration.
The square deal B is a good press, but think about what you may need or want to do in the future, as well as the features the 500 has.

Not doing anything wrong. Unlike the Dillon which does not drop powder except when a case is present, the Star will drop anytime you activate the head.

Easy way to eliminate this is to have an empty case on hand that you can insert and manually rotate with the plate so when you begin actual reloading, the powder will drop into it. When you remove it empty the power back in the tube.
If you use a primed case you can just load it.

If you use just brass, use a nickel case and that will be the reminder. Just leave the spent primer in it t prevent leaking powder.

You can also just hold a case or small scale powder plate under it to collect the powder and then dump it back.

You can contact    FC60     on this site for dies, and     Barreltester     on this site for shell plate, and/or powder measures. The balance of the small pistol primer parts are fine.

Thank you Lindy.

This site is an excellent resource.

I have seen a few of these including some for sale at recent gun shows.  Most Star owners I know of customized their reloading bench in lieu of using a separate base, but it was a popular accessory for a while.
