Star Reloaders / DIY case kicker
« on: March 25, 2021, 08:42:24 am »
I’m going to start working on building a case kicker, it’ll take a little bit of reverse engineering to figure out the dimensions of all the parts… But I think there’s enough information online it shouldn’t be too complicated. If anybody would be willing to take a few measurements along the way to speed up the process it will be appreciated. Planning to make something similar to the RayVin version, Since they have retired I’m assuming I’m on my own, unless I can get one of you fine folks to take a few measurements here-n-there along the way.

Does anyone have any suggestions of other designs that work equally well?

Just looking at the 68U plug, and wondering what the purpose is for the hole in the middle?  Just curious what the general consensus is....just there to be able to hook it and pull it out with a piece of wire maybe?

Star Reloaders / In process of converting to 45acp
« on: March 14, 2021, 06:14:27 pm »
Hi, I finally put together a little bit of money to convert my universal over to 45 ACP. I bought a tool head with dies and a shell plate.  Still missing a few parts, but I’m in the process of checking everything out that I just received, and I discovered that the shell plate openings are large enough that a 45 ACP casing will pull straight out if it’s not pushed all the way to the back of the groove.  I’m guessing that must mean I have a 45 LC shell plate instead? I’m wondering if that is a less common shell plate than 45 ACP, and if I should pursue getting a replacement from the seller if it’s available or if I should keep it and try to trade for a 45 ACP shell plate and maybe a few of the other parts that I’m needing? I thought maybe we could turn it into a win win for me and somebody looking for a 45LC plate.  I think really all I’m lacking is the large primer punch and nut, and the large primer feed bar.  I’m also going to be needing a charge bar but I don’t know yet which one.... maybe a blank.

It looks like the openings in the shell plate are .492” wide.

Star Reloaders / New member/new to me Universal
« on: May 24, 2016, 06:52:10 am »
Don't have time for a long intro ....headed to work.....  An Uncle just gave me a Star Universal press set up for 38 spec wadcutters to use....not going to assume it is mine yet.  I would like to figure out the most economical option to set it up for 45acp.  Would prefer not to tear down the 38 spec head.  I do work full time as a machinist, so i can do some part fabrication/modification.  Can Lee or other brand dies be modified to work in these presses? Looking for suggestions as to the most time and money efficient way to convert ...or links to the best threads that explain the process.

Thanks
 Andy

Edit...I would very much like to get this press set up to run 45, I'm just not sure if I can afford to do it without doing as much of the work as possible myself....instead of just buying parts.  I have seen the going rate for a 45 conversion at around $250+ and I can't really justify the expense.  If there is normally enough material on a standard die set to turn them down and rethread them for the correct size I could probably do that (assuming the material isn't super hard)....not sure how much the upper plate costs by itself...maybe it is too high and is a deal breaker all by itself.....any of the folks doing parts have a price list posted somewhere?
