Star Reloaders / Re: Unknown shellplate
« on: October 02, 2011, 05:23:47 pm »
In my experience, only the 38 Special and 45ACP shell plates are unmarked.  Some 38 Special shell plates are marked with a "U" (Universal?).

It also prevents you from advancing the shell plate if you are out of primers because the end of the primer follower drops into the primer slide and prevents the angle lever from moving.

Original Star/Lifetyme 32 S&W Long Dies and Shell Plates are among the rarest, thus most difficult parts to aquire.   Finding a 32 S&W Long Universal or Progressive would be quite a score.  Fortunately, there are alternatives.  You can have Dave Wilson make the Dies, and Rich Daniels make the Shell Plate.

Star Reloaders / Re: Star crank shaft assembly
« on: September 12, 2011, 01:50:52 pm »
In addition to the bolt and the washer, there is a collar that goes over the shaft.  That needs to be removed as well, but is often hard to do because the hole through which the handle is inserted becomes deformed, and burrs develop that hinder removal of the collar.   After you get the collar off, use a fine file to remove any additional burrs before you push the crank shaft assembly out of the aluminum casting.

Why do you need to remove it?

PS  It would have been better if you posted this in the Lubricator resizer section, but whatever.

Star Reloaders / Re: Hulme feeding problem/38 supercomp
« on: September 10, 2011, 10:32:24 am »
The last 38 Super Comp that I loaded was the 100 rounds I loaded on your machine  ;).   I just don't recall if I had the problem you mention, but if I did, I probably wouldn't have given it a second thought because in my experience, its pretty common.   Maybe others can weigh in on the topic.

I load a lot of 45 ACP and 38 Special.  I do have that problem if I try to go too fast, thus my earlier comment about cadence.  If I raise the handle rather than letting it pop up with the spring I tend to have fewer problems.

You might try adjusting the actuator cam so that it forces the piston back a little further so the case reps cleanly and doesn't catch the edge of the piston.  Also try adjusting your cadence.   I find that if I wait for a split second before raising the handle I get fewer feeding problems.  I think it allows the case to come to rest, held down by the case above before the piston pushes it forward.

 Yes,  the same thread.

Star Reloaders / Re: #45 Primer Punch Rocker Arm
« on: September 06, 2011, 09:00:57 am »
Its not rocket science.   If you install the rocker arm backwards, the primer punch will sit proud of the primer bushing.   If that happens, take it out and turn it around...................

Star Reloaders / Re: Hulme M2 top plate
« on: September 02, 2011, 09:36:03 pm »
OK, but that's not a magnum top plate unless it's been modified.   I have had a number of M3 top plates that have been milled out to accept magnum cases.

Looks Great Geoff, nice aquisition.

In an earlier thread which I can't seem to find right now,  we speculated that the 11/16-24 taper crimp die was introduced in the early 70's, maybe 71 or 72.   Both the price sheet, and the powder slide cam design suggest your machine was made in 1965 or later.

Was it packed in newspaper?  What dates were on the news paper.   There might also be old postage marks on the box.

I'm thinking the M2 is just an earlier version of the M3, not a different type.

I had an M2 once upon a time, I thought it was the same as an M3.   I don't have one any more to compare.

Does the M2 have the recess for 38 special?

Actually that is one of Daves taper crimp dies on the machine pictured above.

Have you looked inside the taper crimp die.  I have had a couple of original Star taper crimp dies that have a ridge in them that catches the edge of the case.   I don't know if the ridge was a product of wear or if it was there to begin with.   I replaced them with Daves dies.

Swarfmonger

It sounds like you are crimping a 45 ACP in the seating station.   If so, you really should buy one of fc60's taper crimp dies and crimp in the crimping station.   Then you can get the crimp you want without the extra force, and without creating a bulge in the case.
