Star Reloaders / Re: Star Reloader Parts

George, Ron...will these bushings you're talking about fit or can I use them in this " ACES" powder slide that I have? I haven't pressed out the bushing in my slide yet but using a dial caliper it seems to measure .5 or 1/2 inch. What's the OD on the Hornady bushings and where can I get them? Thanks, Pete

Toolnon...
Thanks for the info! Every little bit helps. I'm going to press out the bushing that's in there now and see what size I've got. Do you know of any chart that went with the slide and bushing set. Who made these? Again, Thanks...Pete

I've just picked up a bunch of powder slides and powder slide housings. Both O and OO.
There's one in the bunch that's marked " ACES" without any powder or grain designation. It's a OO slide. It appears to have an insert in the charging hole on the slide. Does anybody have any info on this powder slide? Thanks, Pete

Rich Daniels in CT is making universal powder bars now. It's a nice item to have and he does a very good job of making them. He has shell plates on ebay right now. He custom makes different parts for the Star. You could contact him through there it you were interested. Pete

ebay member "compositer" always had lots of small parts to. He buys different machines and tears them down for the parts! Pete

Use a seperate powder scale, throw a charge in whatever powder bar your using then weigh it on the scale...pretty simple. Pete

I have a lot of the small parts. Do you have the number of the part you need? There's a chart on this site with all the numbers. Print out the schematic and find the number of the part you need then you can go from there! Pete

Ps: Try (rbwillnj) on this board. He's got lots of parts too...

It depends on what powder you want to use. What gun are you shooting? What length barrel? Using the 200 grain #68, you only have to go 825fps, plus a little to be sure you'll make chrono. I'm pretty fond of Hogdon Clays, as it is very clean burning. Overall length, and crimp will also affect velocity. Lots of people like 231, bullseye, 700X, Accurate#2. A little slower, not quite as clean, but lower pressure at the same velocity are Unversal Clays , titegroup, Unique, accurate#5. In .45acp, there's a lot of possibilities.....

Buy a loading manual. If you are shooting a 1911, remember to have enough crimp the bullet does not push back into the cases when it hits the ramp. Overall length is also important for reliable feeding.

Did I mention - buy a loading manual???

Some guy named Ken Waters has done a bunch of load development, and his manual has long been one of my favorites....  :D

all the best,

Mike

Just going over some of the older posts and saw this! Ken? What manual? For sale? Thanks, pete

Okay...I've bought a bunch of parts from him in the past to see about having them duplicated and what it would cost including marketing. I hadn't thought about getting a whole new base before. I was just going to machine the one I have and attached the new piece. Now I'm thinking different! Thanks for the suggestions! Pete

I have an earlier base on my Universal. The mount for the powder side has a crack. I'm thinking I might replace it with the newer bolt on mount. Does anybody know where I can get one of those mounts? Thanks, Pete

Does anybody know or remember where the steel and aluminum castings for the presses were produce? Foundry name and location? Or die casting plant name and location? It might be worth an inquiry as far as the old molds and dies are concerned? Did Star in Pioneer get these in the deal too? Pete

Profit is a BIG motivator! From what I've read these machines were in the $1000.00 plus range in the last days of production. With modern manufacturing techniques I would think it could still be possible to keep it there or close anyway (machine work and production tooling done here, castings from China)...I'm sure it wouldn't have go out of sight but still affordable to those that want and need the best! The shooting sports aren't as popular as they used to be so that might become an issue.
For right now, the folks on this board already have there machines...I would think spare parts are more in order for all of US. Built to original part print tolerances!

The USA still has a highly skilled work force (IE: first class machinist/toolmakers) and the facilities to out produce any where else on earth.

Buy American made! Nothing but the best! Pete
