Stars Want to Sell/Want to Buy / Re: WTB 5/8 powder bars
« on: March 07, 2012, 09:33:14 pm »
Bill bought the assets of Star Machine Works.....the reloader portion anyway.   Mostly what he sells is old original Star inventory.  He has had some parts made for him by others.  As I understand it, he is not a machinist.

I have never had a problem with anything I have bought from him.  I have had some issues with his business model.   Sometimes he is very responsive other times not.

Star Reloaders / Re: Lee makes Star dies...Who knew?
« on: March 06, 2012, 10:46:01 pm »
Lee made a run many years ago, and only of sizing dies.  What they have are sizing dies with no decapping assembly.  I believe they made them for Bill Cunningham, but he didn't take them all.  Lee is just trying to get rid of the inventory and they have no plans to make more.

I bought a 40 S&W die set from Bill Cunningham back in 2005.  It came with a Lee sizing die, that I'm still using, but the rest of the set was Star.   The 40 S&W taper crimp die that I have for sale in the WTB/WTS area is from that set.  I replaced it with a Case Kicker friendly die from Dave Wilson.

I haven't had any problems with the Lee die, but Dave's are nicer.

Thanks Doc,

A half in powder slide is fine for .357, but it's probably not the best choice if you want to get up to 22 grains of 2400.  The biggest Hornady Pistol Powder bushing will only get you to 15.5 grains of 2400, but if you remove the bushing and just use the 1/2" hole you can throw a charge of around 21.5 grains of 2400.

For 22 grains of 2400, you would be better off with a 5/8 powder bar.

I have an old style post type taper crimp die available, but if you are looking for the 11/16-24 thread taper crimp die, I suggest that you contact Dave Wilson (fc60).   He makes excellent dies.

You won't get to 10 grains of Unique with a 00 adjustable powder slide, but you can get there with one of my 1/2" Powder slide kits.

Star Lubricator & Resizers / Re: Die Tool
« on: February 09, 2012, 08:39:52 pm »
Most of the time a wooden rod of the proper size is all you need.  Sometimes its nice to have the die removal tool.   It's actually more work to use the tool, but if you have a stubborn die the tool allows you to apply more leverage.

DDS

As mentioned in my email, what you have is a Star Rifle Machine, not a SuperStar.   We are all very envious

Congrats on the SuperStar.   According to Dillon's website, only about 100 were sold.  I'd love to see pictures of yours.   What was the eBay listing number so we can search for it.

I finally managed to put together a complete SuperStar kit last year.   I purchased various parts from numerous sources over a period of about four years.   The last group of parts came from a guy in Germany who purchased a large lot of parts on eBay at a price far higher than I was willing to pay.  Fortunately, he wasn't after the SuperStar parts and I was able to work out a trade.

Attached is a copy of Dillon's SuperStar advertisement which I obtained from our administrator.   It used to be posted in the now defunct picture library on the sister site, http://www.starreloaders.com/.

I'll send a PDF with the parts list and an ad.   Unfortunately the PDF is too big to post here, but here are a couple pictures of a nice one.
