Star Reloaders / Star Univeral conversion
« on: March 23, 2014, 11:02:06 am »
I have a Star Universal set up for 38 Spec.  What would be a decent price for a 45 ACP conversion (Tool head with dies, shell plate and LP priming system)?  And, who would be the "go to" person to purchase it? -- Thanks.

Star Lubricator & Resizers / Re: *** HELP *** IS THIS A STAR LUBE SIZER
« on: February 08, 2013, 11:13:31 am »
I passed your information on two a couple of guys I know in the Pittsburgh area.  They are very knowledgable about vintage casting/reloading equipment.  So far they have check their references back to 1940 with no luck.  They're still looking.

See the link below.  I helped another member with a similar problem on an old(er) model Star sizer...

Yes, I have disassembled one, including the part you describe.  If I remember correctly, you must first disconnect the ram link (S121).  Remove Handle Clamp Screw (S118) and washer, and the handle (S117).

Now, look into crank shaft assembly on the right side of the press (where you removed the clamp screw).  You will see the end of the crank shaft (round) with two small steel wedge pins on opposite sides of the crank shaft.
Using a steel or brass punch that is smaller in diameter than the diameter of the crank shaft, tap the crank shaft out of the housing from right to left.  DO NOT tap on the wedge pins!  Your punch must only tap the main shaft. -- As the shaft taps out the left side of the crank housing the wedge pins will loosen and fall out.  Be prepared to catch them.

Also note that the ram lever that connects the crank shaft assembly to the ram link is not removable.  It is an integral part of the crank shaft.

Refer to the following link for the Star lube sizer diagram on the Magma Engineering site:

Let say the sizing die and top punch would cost you 45 dollars, used.  That puts the sizer at $216 shipped.

It is a newer Star and in very nice condition, and I can tell you from experience that the achillies heal on the machine (lube pump), is much easier to fix on yours than on the older model.  On the older ones, the pump and sleeve are held in place via blind pin.  It had to be drilled out to remove.

Fair price?  I would say its a good price.  You will get a lifetime of use out of it.  -- Also keep in mind that a new one from Magma Engneering will cost you $295 + shipping!...and without any dies!  Dies are extra $45.  http://www.magmaengineering.com/component/banners/click/14/

Replace the HiCar washer on the piston assembly.

WOW!  That stinks!  To say I would be upset, would be an understatement!  Were the packages insured?  Good luck with your search for those parts.

Loading Data & Reloading Procedures / Re: SWC overall length
« on: December 02, 2011, 05:10:33 am »
Sound advice above Ken.

For me, I have never really worried about OAL or crimp with my 200 gr. SWCs.  An old-timer gave me some advice years ago that has served me well.  He said to seat your bullets so that a "finger nail" thinkness of the shoulder remains above the case mouth.  He also said to only crimp the round (esp. if using cast bullets), only enough to chamber.

With a light to standard load, I have never had a FTF with that advice.  -- The FTF's I did have were magazine problems.  For instance, I use Wilson 47 D magazines.  They work well for me when they are new(er).  As the magazine spring weakens over time, the 8th and last round in the mag starts to misfeed.  I correct the problem by replacing the springs (cheap fix), or using the mag only for practice and loading it with just 7 rounds (I know the 7 round thing sounds wierd, but it works...at least that has been my experience)

Good luck with your troubleshooting.  Let us know how you make out.

Jon.

Star Lubricator & Resizers / Re: Size die install
« on: September 10, 2011, 01:38:57 pm »
I have also heated my sizer up a little and then inserted a cold die.  The die, in my experience goes in a little easier; albiet fractionally so.  I also use the machanical advantage of the press leverage to insert the die.  Under no circumstances should you have to POUND on the die to get in to seat!  You could break the sizer that way.
