Greetings Kirk,

Here is a Gil Hebard advertisement from 1972 and an image of a replica die I machined a while back.

Cheers,

Dave

Star Reloaders / Re: THREAD SIZE of #80 Column Shaft Nut
« on: March 07, 2011, 10:58:32 am »
Greetings,

I do not have a 1 7/16" socket to remove the nut from my machine.

Doc, please measure the outside diameter of the threaded shaft. Is it 1.0", 1 1/32", or 1 1/16"?

From what I see in McMaster Carr, I am getting the feeling that the Star nut is a custom, non-standard, size.

Cheers,

Dave

Star Reloaders / Re: #74 Thrust Nut Clamping Screw

Greetings,

Modifying a Socket Head screw will work.

If you want to keep the machine original, I can machine a replica screw.

Cheers,

Dave

Greetings Doc,

The thread size is 1/4-28. The screw is fully hardened and will not be available in the local supply house. The head of the screw is also non-standard.

Dave

Star Reloaders / Re: HULME SHELL TUBING

Greetings Doc,

Before you buy tubing, make sure the rims of the 45 Colt will fit through the Hulme feeder base. With my Hulme, they do not fit.

Cheers,

Dave

Star Reloaders / Re: Modifying 45 ACP seating Dies

Greetings,

It is not a difficult task. Locate a fellow shooter with a lathe and with a small boring bar profile the inside so that the bullet nose will clear the bottom and the outside walls clear the bullet nose at the shoulder.

Alternately, contact me off list for a quote to machine a new #20U Bullet Seater or modify one of your existing ones.

Cheers,

Dave

I have some shell plates stamped "O2", which also is an oil hardening tool steel. Could be coincidence or a reminder for the person doing the heat treatment.

Star Reloaders / Re: 38 Long Colt loading ??
« on: February 23, 2011, 01:52:59 pm »
Greetings,

Looking at the SAAMI spec sheets, the 38 Long Colt is about 0.100" shorter than the 38 Special. The rim and outside dimensions are almost the same.

You have nothing to loose by loosening the lock nut and screwing the die down to see if it will work.

Dave

Star Reloaders / Re: #25 Primer Punch Spring
« on: February 22, 2011, 02:00:36 pm »
Greetings,

I removed the #25 spring from one of my machines.

It measures 0.055" wire, 0.35 Outside Diameter, 0.65 Free Length, both ends closed and ground.

I searched McMaster-Carr and MSC and could not find a suitable substitute.

If Cunningham has these for $2.00 each, it would be money well spent.

Cheers,

Dave

Star Reloaders / Re: Having difficulty re-sizing 9 mm cases on my Star.
« on: February 16, 2011, 10:20:36 am »
Greetings,

Somewhere in some Star literature they suggested using Lanolin to lube the 9mm brass to reduce the sizing forces.

The recommendation was this, wet your fingertips with Lanolin and "stir" the brass with your hand. This would place just enough lube on the cases without making a mess.

Lanolin can be found at the local Pharmacy. Ask for USP. (US Pure) A tube will last a long time.

Dave

Star Reloaders / Re: Part #35?
« on: February 15, 2011, 08:43:09 pm »
Greetings,

The 1/8" plastic piece is press fit into the ferrule on the end of the metal follower rod. Usually, you can push it into the part with little effort.

I will cut you a piece and mail it to you.

I trust you have the standard issue Star Primer Tube and not the extended 100 primer version?

When the plastic piece is inserted, it just falls into the primer slide with little excess to remind the operator to recharge with primers.

Cheers,

Dave

Star Reloaders / Re: DIFFERENCE BETWEEN #18 & #18T
« on: February 15, 2011, 08:37:24 pm »
Greetings,

All the Star Dies I have encountered have the following characteristics...

The #18 has always had a Roll Crimp and the top of the die is threaded for a seating punch.

The #18T generally is about 2.0" long and has no threaded hole at the top. Often it is the bullet diameter clearance all the way through.

I have deviated from the above by machining a Roll Crimp die with no threads for the seating stem. I try to mark the end of the die to distinguish this variation.

In the past, if I wanted to roll crimp in the last station, I would order a spare #18 die from Star.

By the way, the #18T style dies are easier to clean than the #18 dies. I just run a Bore Snake © through the die once and a while.

Cheers,

Dave

Greetings Willie,

I have some 1/8" delrin that will fit the end of the rod. I can send you a piece with your 38 Super Dies, unless you need it straightaway.

Star Reloaders / Re: primer pin
« on: February 10, 2011, 01:49:44 pm »
Greetings,

The primer depth is controlled by adjustment of Item #44, Primer Punch Push Rod.

Set the adjustment so that the primers are at least flush with the end of the case.

Call the manufacturer of the primer and ask what seating depth is recommended. Some say flush, others say -0.003".

If you use brass of various head stamps, this adjustment will be hard to control as each brand have primer pockets of different depths.

Back to your original question, yes, the punch "may" rise above the #26, Primer Punch Bushing.

Cheers,

Dave Wilson
