Greetings,

Try here for the paint....

Someone had "replica" decals made. I bought some, promptly lost them, and cannot recall who sold them to me.

Cheers,

Dave

Greetings All,

I sent an email to McMaster Carr for a tap. I have been unable to locate one on the Internet.

I have a 1/4-27 NPT tap I was going to shorten.

I decided to set up a piece of scrap in my lathe and tap it full length with my existing tap. Bad news, it does not cut large enough.

If McMaster does not come through, I will attempt to machine a tap myself. Or, at lease a possible thread forming tool. Enough to repair damaged parts and possibly thread new ones.

Cheers,

Dave

Greetings,

The thread size is 1/4-27 F-PTF.

You will not find a tap at the local hardware store. It is a special thread.

Dave

Greetings,

Powder lots do vary. I have four different lots of Bullseye from the 1960's to present. I always use a chronograph when changing powder lots and retest my existing loads for accuracy.

Cheers,

Dave

Greetings,

Yes, I can machine new replica dies for the Star.

You would be better advised to place a "wanted" ad on the forum as 38 Special are rather common. This way you would get an original die not a replica.

There were three versions of the Carbide sizing dies. 1) The Perfection Die made by Shockey. It is black in color with red paint highlighting the roll marking. 2) The Lifetyme Die which is flash chrome plated in appearance. 3) Toward the end of Star's existence and both Lifetyme and Perfection had ceased to exist, Star had the dies made by a vendor unknown to me. They are very plain in appearance and the roll marking is not very well done. The latter do function well mechanically, they just do not have the professional appearance of the Lifetyme or Perfection.

Cheers,

Dave

Greetings,

Sounds like a custom made 38 Special 2 Stage die.

Lifetyme offered them for the Star in both 38 Special and 45 ACP.

Redding currently offers a similar die with 7/8-14 threads.

Would be nice to see a photo of the die.

Dave

Greetings,

The thread size varies with the manufacturer.

Lifetyme, the ones I have encountered, are either 7/16-27 or 1/2-27.

If memory serves me well, the Perfection are 1/2-20.

Cheers,

Dave

Greetings,

The Phelps head does not have a boss on the underside of the tool head.

Check your machine or post a photo of the underside of the tool head and one of us should be able to help you.

Also, I memory serves me well, the large donut ring that clamps the shell plate in position is not threaded. It is a simple ring clamp.

Cheers,

Dave

Greetings,

If you put the machine on eBay, it "should" bring about $350.00. Knock off the 20% fees for eBay and PayPal, you would realize $280.00.

The good news is that it appears to be a Universal model and can be converted to other calibers.

I could not read the label in the photo. Is it, indeed, a genuine Star machine, not a Phelps? The tool head will also have "Star San Diego" stamped on the top flange near the sizing die.

I agree, $100.00 is not an acceptable offer.

Cheers,

Dave

Greetings,

Not sure why one press has a smaller opening? However, since you have three other machines as a reference, I would be very tempted to get my small files out and "make the upgrade".

I do have a machine that will not accept a 45 AR case. The other machines work fine.

Dave

Greetings,

I would contact Mr. Cunningham at http://www.starmachineworks.com/

They do show up on eBay; but, it is nearly impossible to verify if they are original or copies.

Cheers,

Dave
