Star Reloaders / Re: Shell plate
« on: February 07, 2017, 12:32:19 pm »
Greetings,

I looked at all my shell plates. None measure the same as yours.

Star generally did not mark the 38 Special and 45 ACP plates. Other calibers I have all are stamped on the bottom.

I suspect that yours is either home-made or a 38 Special plate modified in an attempt to convert to another caliber.

Cheers,

Dave

Greetings,

What is the outside diameter of the plate?

Does it have 0.625" or 0.750" diameter die relief?

Around the shell slot, is it straight or does it have a 45 degree chamfer?

Photos of both sides of the plate would be helpful.

Cheers,

Dave

Greetings,

Reverse Engineered sketch of my CPM Powder Bar.

Cheers,

Dave

PS:    Got to wondering as to which way the radius part faces. Up or down? The shaker rollers are offset to one side, so there must be a correct way.

Greetings,

I will create an engineering drawing and forward it to Bruce Williams.

Give me a day or two.

Greetings Rob,

Does your machine have the base and top plate with thumb screws?

Just missing the powder bar?

I can make a drawing for you to have it machined locally.

Perhaps a small photo of your powder dispensing mechanism.

Cheers,

Dave

Greetings,

I measured my CPM powder bar and it is 3/4" wide by 1/2" deep. The Star bars are 5/8" wide.

You would be best advised to continue to use the interchangeable bushings in the original CPM machine.

They are easily made from 1/2" diameter brass bar stock.

Or, have Bruce Williams of Star Machine Works fabricate them for you.

Originally, I believe CPM used the Pacific, now Hornady, pistol measure bushings. They work fine; but, moving from one bushing to the next is a large weight change.

Dave

Greetings,

What is that like new H&G mould you have in the background?

You are way more organized than me. Compliments!!!

Star Reloaders / Re: Are .38 Spl Seater and TC dies OK for 9MM??
« on: November 29, 2016, 09:43:05 pm »
Greetings,

I have a set of original Star 9mm dies for seating and taper crimping. They are both marked "9mm".

Check with Bruce Williams as he probably has dies for 9mm available.

Star Reloaders / Re: Adjustable powder slide
« on: November 18, 2016, 11:01:11 am »
Greetings,

Looks homemade. One thing of interest is the spring that pushes the sliding insert in one direction removing the backlash from the screw thread. The maker was thinking when he/she machined it.

Adjustable bars are handy for load development. For making a run of match ammo, a fixed bar or one with a bushing is my preference as there is nothing to come loose.

Also, as the weather changes, you will be prompted to "tweak" the adjustable bar to compensate for atmospheric changes.

Dave

Greetings,

I believe that the 38 Special tool heads have a different Angle Lever Cam. The 38 uses the #49 and the Universals use the #49U. Subtle differences; but, different nonetheless.

Greetings,

From what I have seen of the S&B quality in loaded ammo and brass, I would stick with primers made in the USA.

I use Federal, W-W, and Remington. Sometimes CCI.

Star Reloaders / Re: Decapping Pin Assembly
« on: September 23, 2016, 11:28:15 am »
Good question,

When I machine the stems, I put it two screws. My thought was to distribute the load on the pin. Most likely, my approach is the "Belt and Suspenders" method.

Check with Bruce Williams. He has a lot of original parts and would be able to reveal if Lifetyme use two or one screw.

Greetings,

Two options on the expander plug.

1) Find someone with a lathe and chuck up the existing plug and dial it in true. Then polish the diameter with abrasive grit and Kerosene. Start with 240 grit and finish with 600 grit.

2) Contact Bruce Williams at Star Machine Works to see what he has in stock.

Greetings,

Some brass are thinner walled. Such as early R-P, Western, and some of the IMI you have come across.

Contact Bruce Williams at Star Machine Works. He may have a smaller diameter Carbide sizing die.

The fancy die was a LifeTyme 2S. It had two Carbide rings. One for the basic sizing and the second sized only the neck area undersize. They work great as I have one that I bring out for thin brass.

It is possible that you might be able to use a smaller diameter expander plug. For the 0.451" jacketed bullets, a plug that measures 0.449 may do the trick.

More measuring is needed.

Dave

Star Reloaders / Re: It happened again

Greetings,

Is the powder hopper original? The reason I ask is, some plastic has more static electricity potential than others. The original Star tubes were "Excelon" trade name, which I thought was polycarbonate.

There are lots of clear plastic tubes available; but, not all are suitable for smokeless powders.

I have used WST and Bullseye since the late 70's and never had an occurrence that you describe.

Do any of your fellow loaders have an old Star hopper that was metal with the wire level flag?

A possible workaround would be to attach a ground wire to the powder hopper or wipe it down with a anti static wipe that you toss in the clothes dryer.

Cheers,

Dave
