Star Reloaders / Re: Original Phelps Owners Manual
« on: February 04, 2012, 12:14:31 pm »
Greetings All,

A member scanned and sent me PDF images of the Phelps tool.

I always enjoy reading the original documents as they sometimes reveal things I did not know.

Phelps also made other items such as barrel testers. From these old pamphlets a machinist could reverse engineer a similar tool.

Cheers,

Dave

Greetings,

I can machine a set of replica dies in 9mm. Rich Daniels (Barrel Tester) produces shell plates.

Contact either one of us should you be unable to locate a used set.

Star Reloaders / Re: Crank shaft bearing
« on: January 02, 2012, 03:51:18 pm »
Greetings,

Are you referring to the hole for the #61 Taper Pin?

If so, the #58 Column Shaft and #60 Crank Shaft Bearing would have been machined as a noninterchangeable unit.

If you were forced to use repair parts from non-matching units a #7 Taper Ream "may" clean up both pieces and a new taper pin installed. Here again, the alignment of the machine would have to be maintained. Just running a reamer to clean up the holes is not an adequate fix. The repair would have to be done on a milling machine where the parts can be clamped in proper alignment.

This may be a repair for Cunningham, if he has the proper jigs from the old factory.

Cheers,

Dave

Greetings,

Rich Daniels should be able to provide a shell plate.

I can machine the sizing, seating, and crimp dies along with the expander plug.

Contact either of us should you need parts.

Dave

Greetings,

My Father-in-law has a mix of Star and Phelps machines. In a parts box he does have a powder housing stamped "5/8". It is a casting, so I think it is an original Star or Phelps item. The parts are 20+ years old, long before replica items appeared.

There is also a mating brass powder bar stamped "20 gr 2400". Again, impossible to tell who machined it.

Cheers,

Dave

Greetings,

Are you inquiring about the 38 Smith & Wesson/38 Colt New Police that is short?

If so, 38 ACP/Super sizing dies are the same dimensions.

If you size 38 S&W with a 38 S&W Special, you will mangle the cases. I speak from experience.

Check cartridge dimensions for free at   www.saami.org

Greetings All,

The set screws I have encountered with #21C decapping rods for the Lifetyme dies have been #4-40 x 1/8".

I have one Perfection Die, in 45 ACP, and it also is #4-40.

Dave

Greetings,

The malfunction could be magazine related.

Try different magazines to isolate the malfunctions.

If the lips of the magazine are not adjusted for wadcutter ammo you will likely have feeding problems.

Stars Want to Sell/Want to Buy / Re: die and expander nuts, # 17 & 19

Greetings,

As best as I can tell,

#69 is a 0.3125-32 thread with 7/16" across the flats.

#69U is a 0.3750-24 thread with 9/16" across the flats.

Dave

Greetings,

I forgot all about the 3/8-24 nut on the stem style crimping die. I do not think it has an official part number as it was an aftermarket item. Still, it has the same shape and thread size as the 69U and 78 nuts.

Not sure if they made them in house or not. McMaster Carr does not list the style used on the machines.

Greetings,

Thanks for the memory jog.

I do have a 38 Special Lifetyme die that is a high polish chrome finish. All my other dies have the bead blast satin finish.

Greetings,

Sounds like yours is the same as mine. Lifetyme chrome plated the die bodies on some.

The one I have has a large piece of Carbide the actually sticks out of the die about 1/10".

Cheers,

Dave
