Greetings,

There are three sizing dies and punches for the Star Greaser shown at the bottom of the photo.

The long threaded items must go to a different machine.

Just above the three dies is the die puller and nut.

Dave

Dave,

Why were the powder slide housings made of zinc vs. aluminum?

Greetings,

Not sure why. The metal is close to Zamak which is available from several sources. It melts and pours like Lead.

Metallurgy is not my strong suit.

Star did a lot of interesting things. Especially the use of non off the shelf threads.

Cheers,

Dave

Greetings,

Brass will not gall in the Zinc powder slide housing. Aluminum will.

Greetings,

It appears that the press in the front has the taper pin inserted backwards.

It is inserted from the back with the small end entering the hole first.

Might remove it an install it correctly so no more damage will occur.

Star Reloaders / Re: New Bullseye Powder VMD
« on: March 13, 2020, 12:18:19 pm »
Greetings,

I have found the older lots of Bullseye weigh more than the newer production lots.

Best approach is to buy a four pound jug and a chronograph.

Changing powder lots is one thing I do not look forward to.

Dave

Greetings,

There are some aftermarket adjustable bars available.

I do not care for them as you spend a lot of time trying to get the perfect powder drop.

Personally, I use a brass bar with a 0.500" hole bored through to accept 1/2" bushings.

I copied the Lee Precision method and size the bushings in CC (cubic centimeter) values.

When I change powder, I look back in my load book to see what bushing I use last.

Greetings,

The standard tool is a piece of round stock with a hole drilled in the center to clear the primer punch. Then, two drive dogs were machined to engage the slots in the primer bushing.

You never did say what diameter your mystery tool is.

Greetings,

Unable to distinguish the size of the tool.

I have similar ones, about 4" long, that have two drive teeth on the end opposite the handle.

The tool is used to unscrew the primer bushing when changing sizes or cleaning.

Greetings,

Good information.

When I buy a 38 Special Tool Head off eBay, it could have been removed from a Progressive or Universal.

Off to check my tool head stash...

Greetings,

Were the Angle Cams the same on Progressive and Universal machines?

Greetings,

Shell plates have been made from 25 ACP up to 45 Auto Rim.

The 25 ACP was a "special" and original dies do not exist, to my knowledge.

Star did machine some tool heads to accept 7/8-14 dies. However, the dies often need to be modified to function properly. Notably, the clearance of the die nose to fit the shell plate counter-bore.

Dave

Greetings,

I hope the one you get works. Mine does not.
