Star Reloaders / Powder Slide Cam
« on: June 08, 2010, 07:17:58 pm »
Greetings,

The Powder Slide Cam (#30) will come out with a little persuading. It is peened on the edges to remove any play on assembly.

I use a powder bar with bushing inserts. By removing the Powder Slide Cam Screw (#76)  and wiggling the Cam up and out, I can slide the powder bar out without removing the powder reservoir (I have one with a powder shutoff). This saves me from having to remove a lot of extra parts to change powder weights.

Cheers,

Dave Wilson

I believe Star began drilling and tapping the machine for the Hulme casefeeder in 1959.

I am not sure when they began drilling and tapping the last station for 11/16-24 Taper Crimp dies, older models have the 3/8" plain hole, like the one you have. John Giles developed the taper crimp die sometime in the early 1960's.

The above is all from memory and subject to occasional occurrences of "CRS".

Thanks Mike, very kind words, indeed. Put the dies to good use.

Star Reloaders / Re: 45 ACP taper crimp die Question

Greetings,

It is best to crimp in the last station (where you remove the finished round). Older presses have a 3/8" non-threaded hole at this location. Newer tools are drilled and tapped 11/16-24.

As you lower the tool head to seat the bullet and crimp at the same time, you will shave Lead if there is no crimping groove. Should you use a bullet such as the Lyman 452423 there is a crimping groove and a taper or roll crimp works fine. Most Star dies I have seen have a roll crimp in the seating/crimping combination die.

I can drill and tap your tool head if it has only the 3/8" hole. I can also machine a new taper crimp die for you. Contact me off line if I can be of service.

Cheers,

Dave Wilson

Star Reloaders / Re: Convert Progressive to .32 Mag?

Greetings,

I converted a spare tool head for 32 H&R Mag. The 32 S&W Long dies were used. The only part that needed to be machined was the expander plug. If you back off the plug for a 32 S&W Long it will interfere with the powder bar.

Check The Magma Engineering website. They offer an Air Cylinder.

Star Reloaders / Dimensions For a Genuine Star 45 Colt Seating Die
« on: February 09, 2010, 10:49:55 am »
Greetings,

I have started machining a 45 Colt seating die.

What I am missing is the depth from the mouth of the die to the crimping area.

Would someone who owns a GENUINE Star 45 Colt seating die contact me?

Cheers,

Dave Wilson

Star Reloaders / Re: Dies for turning

Greetings,

Yes, you are correct, the Lee dies fall apart if you turn down the outside threads. I have modified RCBS and Redding dies; although, I prefer to machine dies from scratch to duplicate the original Star product. Considerably more time consuming and costly; but, I look at Star loaders as both art and function.
