Star History / Factory returns ?
« on: December 18, 2009, 11:11:20 am »
A post in another topic got me thinking.
I do not know of anyone that had to return a Star machine for tweaking, repair, exchange, etc. The quality was that good. But, there may have been a few.
Interested to know if anyone had any experiences with "problem" machines?

Star History / Star on Ebay.
« on: December 03, 2009, 10:00:31 pm »
There is a nice star on ebay, start bid of $ 800.00

What is in the photos is a copy of a document from Gil Hebard about Star die adjustment.

I think Bruce (RBWillNJ) on this site did a cut and paste from an auction before and copied it here.
Maybe he can do this also and share the results. I am going to ask and try but not sure of result.

Survey Says... / Camp Perry
« on: July 27, 2009, 12:13:57 pm »
Curious as to how many members go to or have gone to Camp Perry.

Since the Star was widely used in Bullseye circles, when Bullseye was THE game, I would imagine a lot.
In the heyday of Bullseye, (I would speculate late 50s to late 60s) the Star was the reloader to own if you were serious about your shooting. Since it did both .38 and .45, and that was all you needed to load target quality ammo that were comparable to, and in some cases superior to factory loaded ammunition.

It is not my intent to insult those that do not shoot Bullseye, as I have shot IDPA, Action Pistol, and IPSC too; with my .45 with ammo loaded on my Star.

Star Reloaders / Interesting Ebay item
« on: May 27, 2009, 09:54:00 pm »
Currently listed in Ebay is an item for the Star. The "instacheck"
Started at $ 15.00, with buy it now for $ 20.00

Description says it checks for double powder charges, or no powder charge in case before seating.
Manual operation.

Any comments from anyone?

Survey Says... / Other prices & Values?
« on: March 18, 2009, 01:07:27 pm »
I started the prices and values as a way of gauging selling and buying by members as an easier way to track trends. It allows for placement of the majority of information in one place on this forum instead of scattered in various posts.
Are the listings for prices and values helpful?
Should I add anything in the comments?
Should I continue?

If so;
Is there any interest in tracking other Star items, or other equipment in general?
I do list toolheads, and have included Berdan and CPM when listings were found.
Most from Ebay, as there is little from Gunbroker or Auction Arms. Anyone know of other possible sites?

Star Reloaders / Powder shut-off reaon?
« on: July 17, 2008, 04:19:09 pm »
Have seen some posts for a powder shutoff. Am wondering the reasons for wanting one. I suppose it would make it easier to change powder bars, mid loading, but that is something not often done, or is it?
In the few instances, (first set up for caliber change) where there may not be a case in that position in the plate, I have dumped powder into a small scale pan or unfired case and then back into the powder tube.
Does it provide easier head changeover, or other benefit, or, ?
Not being critical of those wanting one, just curious.

Star Reloaders / Alternative or substitute parts
« on: May 02, 2008, 07:17:05 pm »
Various areas of this site reference substitute parts. Some members make various parts and accessories.
Plastic for Hulme feeder tubes, Dillon primer follower for primer tube, etc.
Various bolts, screws, springs from other sources to substitute for actual Star parts. The informatory is scattered and hard to find.
Please list here, for members to comment on for those that could use alternative parts to repair or replace original.

Following the auction listings on ebay and gunbroker, I have noted the following recent sales. Gives an idea of the recent resale market, of supply and demand.
 .38 only progressive sold on 03/29/08 $ 701.38
 9mm universal sold on 03/02/08  $ 721.88
 .45 universal sold on 03/02/08  $ 585.06
 .45 universal w/case feed and indexer 02/13/08  $ 566.99
All plus shipping costs additional.

Like most quality goods, they still hold value.

Star Reloaders / Safety cam
« on: March 13, 2008, 02:41:47 pm »

My Star originated with my father in 1965. He had used another Star before he got his without a safety cam installed. It has never been installed on the press I still use. It is in a small plastic bag; might even be original.
We had/have a consistent routine we followed when reloading, start to finish. Neither my father or myself, have ever had a double charge, loading in excess of a 100,000 rounds in both .38 and .45.
I suppose this topic may have as much debate on thoughts about for powder shutoff's.
Do most reloaders use it or remove it? Beside the obvious, why or why not?

Survey Says... / Extra Parts
« on: February 29, 2008, 09:58:26 am »
Since Star is no longer in production, parts availability, both original and aftermarket will eventually dwindle. While some can be easily fabricated or adapted from Dillon and others, etc, some cannot. I have been making sure I have some back-up parts on hand if needed for replacement. My first Star was my fathers from 1965, so if parts are not needed by me, they may be for who I pass the presses onto.
Thought I would start a discussion on what users see as essential spare parts inventory.
I figure at the very least:
Extra decapping pins
1 full set of all springs
1 extra primer bar in small and large
1 extra of each size powder bar used

I have not had to replace any parts yet, and that is with over 40 years of use, but you never know!
Would like to hear others suggestions, thoughts, ideas!

Star Reloaders / Primer tube follower question
« on: February 28, 2008, 09:01:11 am »
The primer follower rod exerts enough weight on the primers to help insure good feeding and protecting the primers from exploding, while at the same time, is strong enough to engage the primer bar when the primers run out.
Does anyone know what material was used on the end of the primer follower for this purpose?

Any suggestions on best method to retrofit a rod that does not have anything on the end? I have a second hand, weighted, (homemade by someone) brass rod that has nothing on the bottom, that I currently do not use for safety concerns. I can alter the top to a lighter weight so it is equal to the Star originals, but need something safe to add to the end where it contacts the primers, and when empty the primer bar.
Suggestions welcome.

Survey Says... / New member intro
« on: March 08, 2007, 04:53:49 pm »
Just found site, and read many posts. Already found out information I did not know. Very informative!
For the record.
My father bought a universal Star new around 1965 with an extra toolhead. I still have it in .38 and .45. I also have since acquired others, all universals.
Two are set up with additional toolheads to switch between .38 and .45 toolheads, but mostly one always .45, one always .38 for convenience. Originally and still used for NRA Bullseye 2700 shooting.
The other two have only one toolhead each, and I am going to eventually part with them and other equipment, to reduce all my years of shooting equipment accumulation, once I inventory what I really have to make available.
Am converting one toolhead to 9mm. and will assess what I have, and what I want to keep.

All my rifle reloading is done either via single stage for seldom shot calibers, (7mm, 30/40 Krag, 8mm, etc.) and a Dillon 550 for 30-06, 308, and 223.
