Star Reloaders / Indexer-Broken Spring
« on: November 03, 2021, 05:51:57 pm »
I have had/used 2 or 3 of these indexers over the yrs but have no paper on them. The unit operates by meaans of an arm pushing a slide w/ a "U" shaped end against a case moving it to the next position(Prime). The movement is accomplished by a short upstroke of the operating handle.

A small coil spring secures to the above U shaped part. This coil spring is broken... Can anyone provide info on this spring?? A supplier? Instructions to make one?

Thanks,
Ron

Star Reloaders / Adapting A Star to Power Drive
« on: July 22, 2019, 10:04:35 pm »
Has anyone had experience with building a drive unit or adapting one of the aftermarket units, such as the  www.MarkVIIloading.com
which are designed for use on Dillons' 850's or 1050's?

Age arthritis and other small joys are why I ask.
Thanks,
Ron

This is a bit late for this thread BUT; a few yrs ago I started a new 4# of BE. My SP is to load a small no of rds w/ my std .45 WC charge of 4.15 (check drop wt 1st). The load were very weak, smoked, would not cycle dependably. The lot required 4.5 for reliability.

I called Alliant and they said results were well within their spec but did not say what that spec was. Over the yrs I used 3 bushings for the variations. They are 4.0, 4.15, & 4.25. Excepting the lot prev described they have covered the variations.

Hope this might be of use to someone?

Star Reloaders / Re: "CPM" press (Star clone?)

Bill Detloff was the owner of the Clyde co which made the CPM. A BE shooter, he and his wife shot in our winter league, attended our matches, Camp Perry, and matches in NW Ohio.

From this he learned Stars were hard to get. He felt their price could be beat and improvements made. He designed, copied?, his machine and made a hundred or so of them. As I recall he purchased a number of the base castings. I think their were a few castings left over. Likely a very few.

He sold everything and purchased a sailboat and lived on it traveling widely. A close friend (mine) was also a good friend of the Detloff's and after Bill sold the loader portion my friend sold a few loaders and various left over parts for Bill. There were also some black powder pistols & supplies.

3 of my friends obtained loaders from Bill by working their purchase price off in his business. Bill passed on several years later.

I made a number of attempts to contact the new owner with no success. I was trying to locate parts for a friend who had moved.

Varmintpopper,
I set my star up just as yours is a good many yrs ago. I use the setup yet when loading .45acp's.  Recently I have been loading more .38 Spl's so Iand reshaped the saftey cam to operate as a cartrige kicker.

Star Reloaders / Re: Different Saftey Cam

No, not really.  It would require welding, re-heat treating as well as making up the ejector spring itself. Not to mention reducing the diameter of the Shell Plate Thrust Nut to clear the "hook".
Jerry,
I decided to give mod of the std cam a try. My fin rnd ejector is sprg wire & independant of the SC. I'm reshaping the old SC to clear but right now am just getting ready to resume the project...had a forced interruption..surgery then infection which cost about 6 wks and did God knows what to my train of thought!

Do you think the orig cam whould be heat treated?

Thanks for any comments,

Ron

When reconditionng an old machine I needed sprgs & just took the tired
ones to the local hdw where I found replacements for the one you mention + a couple of others which escape me at the moment.
