05/08  Star Universal in .45acp.    Listed on Ebay [no [no e-mail]@ $ 425.00  / Not sold

06/??  Relist of above.  /Not sold

Kenn,

There appears to be buyer "resistance" when the seller establishes a rather high, but not out of line, starting price. Independence? Often there are no bids though machines regularly are sold in the price rangez/

Survey Says... / Re: Camp Perry
« on: July 28, 2009, 07:06:32 pm »
I shot at Perry for some 20 yrs. I frequented Commercial Row from '65 thru '04. Over those yrs there were a few stars offered by individuals but no mfg presence. Unfortunately bullseye has been declining for the past 15 yrs or so as is reflected by the no. of perry entrants as commented on by Kenn.

I was fortunate to live on Catawba Island from '65 thru '04 making the matches convenient. Those were the days my friend!!

Ken,
The Star listed [no e-mail]@ Perry belonged to a longtime friend and fellow shooter from Port Clinton now deceased. It was sold for the family by a mutual friend & shooter. There was no interest in it locally. There was only minimal interest [no e-mail]@ Perry but it did sell for the asking price. As I understand it the buyer already owns more than 1 star & may have been buying it for a friend.

The case feeder was a copy made by one of our club shooters using a Hulme as a pattern. There were 2 heads, the machine being set up for 38 & 45.To my knowledge it was well cared for.

Star Reloaders / Re: Hornady powder bushings in Star Machine
« on: July 05, 2009, 02:22:14 pm »
I also have  Hornady bushings & housing which a friend made. Seems like the spacers would be a bit handier. I have the 0 & 00 also. The 0 is all I use in the Progressive as I load 38' s for a couple of 1911 conversions on it. I had an extra set of bushings of unknown background so bored the Prog 0 for their use. My experience w/ powder variation in the last 10 yrs or so has been such that to maintain a constant load flexibility in powder metering is needed!

I hope Bruce proceeds as I think anyone who tries them will be very satisfied

I think Star recommended & I have seen several set up on a narrow bench about 14" wide, open underneath & positioned at a right angle to the tool/workbench. Heigth depends on whether the operator is seated or standing & if standing, his heigth. This allows easy access to tthe rear of the machine & a helper if a 2 man operation is to be used. The machines are usually mounted on blocks 1 1/2 to 2" high so a spent primer catcher can be slid under the base. I use T-nuts to hold them in place allowing easy moving of the machines

I have 2 mounted side by side in this manner & am planning to lengthen the bench as they are too close. A container for fin ammo can be  mounted underneath the bench & a passageway cut thru the bench for the rds to drop thru. Spent primers can be handled in a similair manner if desired

One of the units has the case feeder installed. Check the tubes. they may fit in the  aliminum block sitting on pins on top pf the [edit]'y bolted to the machined base. This w/b the complete case feeder. Kenn has steered you right as to missing parts & checking the diagrams. I''m not sure if dies are all in place. The angles used in pics hide that area somewhat. The size of the (hole) taper crimp station, whether there are tc dies are important. Older machines have a small threaded hole while newer are drilled & tapped the same as the other die stations

Check any brass tubes as they should be primer feed & pick up tubes. You should at least apply light oil to prevent further rusting from handling. Might make a mess but will pay off in the end.

Good Luck,
Ron

Star Reloaders / Re: Conversion of my Star Progressive to 9mm
« on: June 03, 2009, 04:57:54 pm »
bilrok,
When I contemplated the same chg as you are a machinist friend experienced with stars advised he has solved this problem by converting the Prg to 45 & used the Un for 38 & 9mm.  Below is his reccomend which I value due to his ability & experience.

"You can machine it out to take the 9mm plate but you need the adj. fingers of the universal to center the case... But what you can do is machine out the progressive to take the 45 plate and use the universal for your 9 & 38s. It is an easy machine to fit the plate and the 45 case is big enough to center itself. It will then be 45 ONLY. "

All that being said 330 OKH has related his experience & I respect his expertise also. He might relate whether you could encounter problems turning the hard shellplate.

I guess it's one person's approach to guarding against double or no charge rounds. W/O a hands on evaluation it would seem just as easy to back the plate up & remove the case for visual examination.

Many years ago I saw a star which provided for visual by a mirror permanently mounted.

These conditions are usually caused by some kind of interruption in operation, either mechanical or by outside interference. If the operator's routine does not cause a check to be made the method of check is of little value, unless of course it is automatic. Machine condition & maintenance is the 1st line in guarding against these problems.

Other's experiences, approaches, their routines would be of interest & I think contribute to safety.

Thanks,

Hardwares & hobby stores often have tubing which can be adapted for use as primer pickup tubes.

Bruce & Ken,

It's interesting to hear the nuances involved in the use of these machines by various operators.  I'm confined to a wheelchair and have seriously deteriorating shoulders form their (over)use over the yrs. Star being a benchtop machine is much more convenient. The indexers allow for one handed operation while the off hand is used to steady myself. Just makes life easier. I'm not sure my production is much faster than without. Surprisingly the biggest gain was from the setup to auto-eject.

I too have observed that changes to the machine setup are noticeable to the operator and are well worth giving attention to!

My universal has seen use since 1973 & I notice more jams, rounds loaded w/o primers, etc, than some yrs ago. I don't know if it's me, if I tend to miss some of the little things, or I just don't remember! maybe the latter as my scores haven't kept pace w/ my age!
