Bruce & Kenn,
I would appreciae it very much if you would remove the pics and all comments relating to them. Obscene! And I have to filch thru drawers for parts etc! Was even gonna buy a lost screw replacement from Bruce until my wife came up w/ it.

I feel bad enough about my lack of tidyness w/o you guys showin off!

I think the .463 is from work done by John Giles. He reportedly did extensive testing to determine the best taper crimp. Gil, Jim Clark, & Giles were preety from the same "class".

The last 2-3 yrs I have opened the crimp up to the same area as Bruce. I did it based on the appearance of bullets pulled for one reason or another. I didn't like the amt of damage and am trying to minimize it.

BUT; I just had my loads tested and the groups were terrible. We think the problem is bullet wt variation. The tester, an experienced shooter & smith recommends Giles crimp .465+ or -In the past I had cast myself & didn't have the problem of wt variation or poor group.

If this is confusing to you...it is to me also!?

Are .32 ACP dies available from any of these supplier? For some time dies for this cal have been offered on ebay (not bid items) at $75 per die including the expander plug.

Rather high, but maybe they aren't available elsewhere?

In normal operation there is a differnce in charge weight which demonstrates the effect of a change in opearting manner. The process of loading may tend to eliminate variations in manner of operation which has always been emphasized in powder measure operation.

I notice a 1/10 or so variation in the chg wt from time to time in weighing using a given bushing or slide. I supose this to be moisture as the difference is not observed when shootnig.

All this is exclusive to lot to lot variation. For my short line loads I have 3 bushings which might be referred to as light, normal & heavy. The wt dif in these are .15 grain. When starting a new lot of powder the appropriate bushing is determined.

I pass this along as food for thought. I am interested in hearing of other's experience in this area.

This subject has me baffled. Both my machines are std powder resevoirs with baffles. I thought they all were so constructed. I recall some yrs ago an article on loading for competition accurate loads which touted the stars because they offer an increase in quality because of powder measuring consistency.

Loading Data & Reloading Procedures / 9 mm cases in the "Freeloader"
« on: August 30, 2009, 02:29:08 pm »
I'm using a home made copy of the "Freeloader" and in running my 1st 9's am getting a large number of upside down case feeds. Have any of you encountered this problem? Will a smaller diameter tube work or solve the problem?

I have used this freeloader for years & many rounds of 38's & 45's.

Thanks,
Ron

Loading Data & Reloading Procedures / Re: Loading .380 with 9mm dies?
« on: August 29, 2009, 04:06:19 pm »
TA,
Thanks...I  didn't note that I pulled the round apart after finding it when sorting/boxing. Today I was at the range today when a shooter came in w/ a pristine Browning 1910. I was an observer while it was attempted to ascertain caliber. I didn't see it up close but understand it was marked PK & 9mm. Nothing to indicate short or Kurz but all seemed inclined towards .380.

The gun was found by the owner's brother after an accidental death and was a surprise to all involved. All agreed there was considerable value attached but the owner is determined to shoot it once cal is determined. I suppose this is typical of incidents involving old guns. It was comforting to see our range officers were very cautious in advice & handling. The lack of caliber in detail in the paper work ot=r stamped on the gun was a surprise to me.

I recently purchased a Giles 38 special conversion w/o any changes in the original Colt 38 Super marking. The gun store aquired the gun sans clip so put a new 38 Super Colt in it. I recognized it from the Giles sights, bought it, ground the mag to accept & feed 38 specials as Giles did and it is indeed a "super" gun! Not being identified was to my advantage in this instance!

Check putting the thumbscrew clamp on the tool head "link". It probably uses the thumbscrew to provide adjustment for travel. The spring on mine is attached to the indexer itself. But then I'm not at all sure I have the same type indexer as you.

Physical handicap pretty much precludes my tipping the entire head so here's my method. Cut approx a 3" section from a plastic milk jug which has the corner (90 deg) in it, then;
1. loosen the hopper
2. Insert the corner of the plastic between the hopper & top of the housing
3. Holding above in place drain the pdr into original container

A small plastic cup (yogurt) may work better than the plastic mentioned above-just trim one side away for access.

I am sure it does. There is always a certain amount of trust required on Ebay, Gunbroker, etc. and that s often impacted by the amount in question.
No one wants to lose money, but taking a chance and losing $ 10.00 is more acceptable than risking a
$ 100.00 or more as some items are.

You're more observant than I !!
Thanks!
