Modifying 45 ACP seating Dies
« on: March 02, 2011, 04:59:24 pm »
I know that someone makes a seating die for Dillon's that seats swc bullets from the shoulders and a friend I shoot told me this past weekend that his star as well as another friends star seating dies were modified to do this as well. Does has anyone done this and is it possible to just drill out the seating insert? Any help would be appreciated.

Greetings,

It is not a difficult task. Locate a fellow shooter with a lathe and with a small boring bar profile the inside so that the bullet nose will clear the bottom and the outside walls clear the bullet nose at the shoulder.

Alternately, contact me off list for a quote to machine a new #20U Bullet Seater or modify one of your existing ones.

Cheers,

Dave

Oddly enough, at present I have 3 45ACP perfection seaters.
All three appear at first blush to have been designed for RN, 230g bullets.
However, when I took one apart, there was a considerable amount of lead slag
that was HIDING the shoulder seating surface.
There was some much lead and lube, that the shoulder seating area was
hidden by the accumulation.

I cleaned this accumulation away with a dentist's tool and there you go...
shoulder seater was there all along.  Just hidden.  On all three.

Maybe I am lucky?  I shoot 100% LSWC's which I cast from a H&G #68 FB 6 banger mold.

Many target shooters want the 45 ACP LSWC to be seated by pressure on the shoulders vs the tip of the bullet.
The bullet head spaces on these shoulders in a tight chambered bullseye pistol barrel.
So the shoulders are the reference point for such seating.

As an aside... of ALL people... you are asking for PICTURES?

From my recollection in 1911 Pistols the shoulder of the Bullet should be Flush with the mouth of the case...45's seat in the chamber via the mouth of the case.......
Is this not so...???

I always leave a little bit of the shoulder above the case mouth, I think they feed better that way.

Some shooters leave conderably more of the shoulder exposed.  They like the shoulder out far enough to start into the rifling.

My shoulder is a little exposed. As Bruce notes sometimes it is for feeding, and it does seem to help that by limiting the case catching on the barrel hood, but also sometimes for tighter chambering.  Mine almost nearly/barely/touches the rifling, reducing that little bit of excess jump or free play of the bullet when it fires and leaves the case for the x-ring!

Not being a expert, In my early years in reloading I was told/taught that the bullet should not touch the lands and groves....
Definition: (EXPERT)
EX = A Has been......
PERT = A drip under pressure.....
My 2 cents worth...

My reason for the nearly/barely/almost comment.
