Star History / Re: Star Price History

Jet22,

What is the source of your data.  Is it a "Star" price list or invoice?   The December 68 price doesn't seem consistant with other data.

Very interesting, haven't seen that before.    I do have an original May 1934 issue of American Rifleman in which F.C. Ness reviews the Star Reloader.  There is a single picture of a Star Progressive in that article, and there is a lot of lettering cast into the base, but you can read it in the picture.   Also, no brass name plate is evident.

Dec 1, 1968? ? ? ? ? ? ? $ 262.50? ?(with carbide sizing die option. data from Jet22)
July 15, 1970? ? ? ? ? ? $ 287.50? ?(with carbide sizing die option.? data from Jet22)
May 15, 1975? ? ? ? ? ? $ 450.00? ?(invoice from Kenneth L. Walters)
February 1, 1977? ? ? ?$ 525.00? ?(from Kenneth L. Walters)
March 1, 1979? ? ? ? ? ?$ 760.00? ?(carbide sizing dies are standard)

Above list has been edited to include information from Kenneth Walters and Jet22.? ?Any additional data would be appreciated.

Star Reloaders / Re: How do you tell a Star from a copy?
« on: September 11, 2006, 10:12:55 am »
Ed,  The threaded holes that we were talking about are the holes for the powder measure spout, and the expander plug.  These holes are 1/2"-27 on a Star.  I think you are thinking of the holes for the dies, and they are 11/16-24 on a Star, and 7/8-14 on a Berdon.

I hadn't noticed it before, but my Berdon tool head has a lathe turned flange as well, so I guess that's good way to tell a Berdon from a Phelps.  When I get a chance, I'll post some pictures.

The threaded hole for the expander plug on my Berdon is not the standard 1/2"-27 that Star uses, but I found that it uses the same thread as an RCBS expander plug.  I don't know if this is original, or a later modification.

I only have a Berdon tool head, but its blue, and just about an exact match to the Stars that I have.

Berdon is another company that made Star copies, and their tool head also lacks the collar.  The Berdon tool head used standard 7/8-14 dies also.  Another feature distiquishing a Berdon tool head is that it could be used with either a Star type powder slide housing, or with a standard powder measure.  Below the Powder Slide Housing was a ~7/8" unthreaded hole for mounting a standard powder measure.   I have a Berdon tool head, and it came with a 1/2" cast iron powder slide housing.

My Berdon is stamped "Berdon" on the tool head between the taper crimp station, and the seating station.  Very small letters, and a very light stamp.  I only have the head, so I can't compare the rest of the machine.

Star Reloaders / Re: Ebay, Loaders & Parts For Sale
« on: July 05, 2006, 10:17:09 am »
I believe you are both referring to the guy who sells under the ID of star0reloader0mentors on ebay, and is otherwise known as Paul Jones.   I have had a number of dealings with Mr.Jones.  He does indead have some "new" Star parts which are expensive, but if you need them, well, you need them.   I have purchased parts form Mr. Jones both on and off of ebay and have no complaints.  He is a bit slow to respond, but compared to Bill Cunningham, he moves at light speed.

I have always wondered about his self promotion.  I would be curious if anyone had any experiance with him back in the seventies when he says he was a top dealer?

A few years back, when I first got turned on to Star Reloaders, I joined both his Fourm (list) and this one at the same time.  At the time, this forum still had a picture site with a number of very interesting and useful pictures and brochures on Star competitors and Star accessories.   I contacted Mr. Jones and suggested that he contribute copies of some of his brochures to be included on this site.  You wouldn't believe the email I got in response.   Also, he kicked me off of his fourm.

Rottweiler,

I have sent you emails, and have sent you private messages.   I would like to do a swap, but you never got back to me about the top punch.  Are we swapping top punches also?   send me an email at bwilliams853 at earthlink.net so we can work out the details

PS  You have to alter the format of your email address or the forum software will strip it out

Star Reloaders / Re: Tool Head with Extra Die
« on: March 28, 2006, 11:18:49 pm »
The extra hole is for a seperate taper crimp die.   Actually, the small hole in your other tool heads is also for a taper crimp die.  The tool heads with the small hole are older, and Star made a special taper crimp die that was inserted in that hole.   Later they switched to a hole drilled and tapped for the dies the same size as the sizing and bullet seating dies.

For rimless auto cartridges, the most accepted practice is to give them a taper crimp rather than a role crimp because the bullet indexes on the carse mouth.  This is best done in a seperate station rather than in the bullet seating station.   Some people prefer to use a taper crimp die for rimed cartridges as well.   It sounds like you have a relatively rare taper crimp die for 38 Special.

Star Reloaders / Re: Interesting Star Reloader on eBay

I agree that the condition of the press looks good, but I'm not thinking of buying it.  I have enough Stars already, and some would say to many.  I'm just curious about the parts installed on the reference reloader on ebay because I have never seen any like them.  It looks like a pretty complicated indexer, but from the pictures, its hard to tell how it works.  Well, actually I'm just guessing its an indexer.  It looks commercial, but maybe its home made.   Once again, the seller doesn't provide any useful information.

Star Reloaders / Interesting Star Reloader on eBay

There is an interesting Star Reloader on eBay.  It has some parts I have never seen before.  Can any of you identify them?
It appears to what I assume is an auto indexer, and there is an odd attachment on the case feeder that I don't recognize either.

Star Reloaders / Green Star? Reloader on eBay
« on: February 09, 2006, 05:51:42 am »
Has anyone seen the Green "Star" Reloader on eBay?   Looks more like a Phelps to me,  or possibly a Berdon.   The shape of the aluminum base is not quite right.   It also has 7/8" dies, but that doesn't prevent it from being a Star.  Here is the link;
