Star Reloaders / Re: Any interest in new star type reloader?
« on: December 28, 2009, 06:27:00 pm »
My opinion only.

I think it important that parts interchange with existing stars. That would be a major selling point to me. If not, it would be like the Dillon, simply another reloader option.  Tool heads and parts available in rifle calibers would be well received.\, and as Hardrockshot notes, minimal plastic.

If the above were done, prices would have to be in an area that would be competitive with what else is out there. Certainly it could be more expensive but not overpriced.

What it would be priced at would have to be determined by calculating all the variables that impact the cost of manufacture such as materials, R&D, warranty, and of course a profit?

Good luck. Would love to see this.

While there is an up front cost, there is always a payback where you come out ahead. In the case of Star, the quality is such, it will last for whatever length of time you use it. You could also resell it later when you reduced the cost and earned some savings from its use.

As Art noted, it all depends on how many rounds you load over time, as well as componet cost.  Also why you reload..

While there may be a source for $ 13.00 9mm, it certainly is not permanenet, and I speculate not factory target ammunition. It will eventually go up,  but so do the components. Besides reloading cost savings, there is the satisfaction of producing your own ammo to your own specs.

As Art noted, he found a combination that provides very accurate results that he likes. I reload .45, .38, 45lc, & 9mm.on my Star. I believe my loads, will hold there own with most if not all factory stuff I have shot. My guns like my loads and function well and are very accurate. Certainly the guns and loads shoot better than I can shoot them.

You have to decide high, but it is a caliber not as common as the other two.

Sent you a PM ..

Star History / Re: Factory returns ?

Agreed Ron.

I have a Dillon 550 that I use exclusively for rifle. Good machine, no complaints, makes good ammo, and they back their warranty claims.  But, it is not the same as a Star!

Star History / Factory returns ?

A post in another topic got me thinking.
I do not know of anyone that had to return a Star machine for tweaking, repair, exchange, etc. The quality was that good. But, there may have been a few.
Interested to know if anyone had any experiences with "problem" machines?

I am sure the same will never be said with most plastics, which tend to show wear quicker than metals do. Most newer things in general are designed for obsolescence. This insures future purchases and profits.

I do not know of anyone that had to replace a Star, or for that matter had so send any back for tweaking, fixing, etc. Added a newer one, wanted more, but not replaced.

Ron

Never said I was tidy.
Just a bit organized.

In all fairness, the first storage base was made by my father, circa 1965.
I just copied his for my others.

Ron

This is where you have to start out with process of elimination, especially if you change something.
Bullet weight, powder weight, crimp, etc. etc. I know I check random weight for each box of bullets I open to reload to see variance. Powder on the Star seems to remain remarkably consistent, as do dies.

A few years ago, my groups (Bullseye) started to open up to the point my consistent scores were starting to drop. Started with weights, etc. progressed to the gun. Turned out the barrel crown was the problem.

Of course it is never the last item ever considered. The shooter!

There is a copy of a Gil Hebard spec sheet uploaded by RBWillNJ in the topic  Star on Ebay.
Bruce commented on the suggested taper. He can propably provide some insight too.

Differant brand but same specs as CDRT.

Works and shoots well. Very well. Better than me.

I do not have as many, but mine are very similar to Bruce's except I also drilled holes, and made cuts to the wood base to accept the base plug as well as the primer punch, spring, and nut, and primer slide.
Allows me to keep all the caliber and working parts together.

There is a nice star on ebay, start bid of $ 800.00

What is in the photos is a copy of a document from Gil Hebard about Star die adjustment.

I think Bruce (RBWillNJ) on this site did a cut and paste from an auction before and copied it here.
Maybe he can do this also and share the results. I am going to ask and try but not sure of result.
