Hi Warren,
I made my expander out of A10 tool steel.
There are members on this forum that make parts for sale. Hopefully one of them can help you out.
I used Brazos 160's at 25yds last season. My 50yd load with 180's actually had less felt recoil.

I used Brazos coated 180gr 45cal LSWC and had great 50yd slow-fire groups. The Ransom Rest produced consistent 2" to 2-1/2" groups [no e-mail]@ 50yds.
I'm going to order more for next season.
I have a custom step expander in my Star, so I can't address your expander question.

Hi Jasper,
I bought a bunch of Berdan machines a while ago and yours doesn't match them. I also have Stars and no match there.
The die head on yours looks machined and welded - is it?. The other brands are cast.
Another way to check is the use of Star's 1/2-27tpi expander plug thread. Not a normal pitch. See if yours is 1/2-20 or 28tpi.

A few years ago Dave made me a 9mm conversion for my Universal. He does beutiful, accurate work!!!

I have a .38spl progressive that I machined slots and added locating straps to the base to make it easier to remove 38spl cases in the event of a non-conformance.

Not all progressives are identical:
The ID of my progressive base is right on 3.620. As you can see from the picture below of the 9mm shellplate the ID would need to be turned alittle bigger to give the 9mm cases a little clearance. Dimension across shellplate is 3.622.

I have three Progressives and have modified two of them to mimic the Universal. The picture that Lindy posted of the first Progressive, I just copied the tabs on a Dillon 1000 that I have. On the second Progressive they were made like this and function much easier.

Even if you kept slight positive gas pressure on the heat chamber?....My intent was to leave a trickle of argon flowing during the heat cycle...but maybe that isn't enough....maybe it would use way too much gas.

The foil is easy enough.

We purge a muffle furnace at work and it takes a Dewar Argon tank $$$$$. Stick with stainless bags.

Your comment about volume loading on a Dillon 1050 made me snicker.

I have a friend that uses a Dillon 1050 for volume loading of "practice" ammo.

For his "Match" ammo, he loads on the Star.

Congratulations on the purchase of three nice Star machines.

Yes, it is a progressive press. The shellplate must be the progressive outside diameter to work.

Here is a modification I made to my .38spl Progressive. I made the slots wide enough to R & R the .45acp case.
It's so much easier to fix a problem and not have to rotate the cases out!!!
Basically copied Dillon's RL-1000.

I bet the dog used to be the "bullet feeder" and can "kick back" now. I'm amazed at how reliable the bullet feeder is!
