Star Reloaders / Any "Gotchas" about doing 9mm in a Progressive?
« on: July 02, 2013, 01:25:42 pm »
I have an extra tool head, a new set of 9mm dies a new shellplate  and an extra Progressive. I hear that the shell plate needs a few thou removed from the diameter. Does this render it useless for future use on the Universal, or do the adjustment "fingers" have enough travel to compensate?

Can anyone who's actually done this comment on the functionality ? I don't mind swapping the fixturing on my Universal, but it would be nice to have a dedicated 9mm machine

Many thanks to all for your advice.

Star Reloaders / Hulme case feeder question
« on: June 22, 2013, 02:08:36 pm »
Bruce made me a new set of rollers and the pin that actuates the Hulme case feeder. My question is what holds this pin/roller assembly inside of the piston itself? It looks like the front of the piston is threaded. Is there normally a set screw that's inserted in there to hold the "axle" for the rollers in place?

Thanks

Stars Want to Sell/Want to Buy / FS: Brewster (?) Indexer (sold)
« on: June 02, 2013, 01:32:21 pm »
I have this Brewster (I think) indexer that came with some other equipment. I'm not sure if I've got all the parts or not, but what I've got is in the photos. Nothing broken though it's clearly been used.  I hope someone can use it . I'll send it to you for $65 postpaid in the US

Star Reloaders / First impressions (and cartridges).
« on: May 05, 2013, 08:38:42 am »
At the risk of wearing out my welcome, I'll share that I completed my first cartridges on my Progressive yesterday. I have some fine tuning to do but everything seemed to work well except for the operator.

As a result of this being my first progressive reloader, I got really good at removing the tool head and the shell plate and cleaning powder out of the base.  I do have a powder drain, which I will eventually remember to use !

In the limited amount of time spent reloading (versus cleaning  :)  ) I immediately noticed how well this machine works. I'm used to single stage or Lee Turret press operation. The turret works, but it's fiddley...the shell needs to be manually futzed with to get the primer seated, the indexing is not always ...indexed, etc.  The Star makes this all seem easy (once I remember that every handle pull drops powder!).

The case feeder works fine and the whole unit operates very smoothly.... no news to all of you who have owned and operated these machines for some time, but it's really fun using these fine old loaders!

Thanks to all of you for the help so far. Now... on to the sizer!

Star History / Its for sale
« on: April 20, 2013, 08:59:35 pm »
Went to get a look at the Star 10th Ave location, and it's for sale.

Anyone know if this is the same building as the machine shop, or only the same location?

Star Reloaders / Was there ever a date code, or...
« on: March 06, 2013, 08:12:46 pm »
Did Star ever date code, or serialize their equipment? I guess my real question is there a way to determine when the reloaders were built?

Thanks

Star Reloaders / Advice for the n00b
« on: January 26, 2013, 09:34:34 pm »
Hello All,
Thanks for letting me be part of the forum. I've been looking at Star equipment as it comes and goes on ebay and finally signed up here to learn more about them.  I like to shoot 38 Special, 9mm and 45 ACP which seems a good match to Star reloaders.

Can you please advise me what to look for (and look out for) when purchasing a first Star? Which model should I select? Any other advice that would help me avoid making mistakes on my first purchase would be greatly appreciated.

Best
John ???
