Title: WTB 5/8 powder bars
Post by: LeupoldMRK4 on March 04, 2012, 04:33:13 pm
I have a line on a 5/8 powder housing.  Before I buy it I am wondering if I can get some fixed size bars first. looking for bars that will work for 357 mag and 44 mag . I have some older 2400 powder I'd like to use up.  13-22 grains The charge is that critical I can adjust the size.

I know but $130+ $10 for shipping for a powder bar is a little too much for me.  He doesnt offer fixed bars.

And a complete housing is $40 for the lower and $40 for the upper half.  That will put me at $220 bucks.

I am having a hard time pulling the trigger on those prices. I think I would rather put that money towards a complete press.

I dont need these parts..... I want them.

I think there is a 5/8 bar up on flea bay now.  Looks like you may have to drill it for the charge you want.  good luck.

That powder slide doesn't have a Spring holder pin and probably doesn't have
the two rollers.............
You might try R.Bruce Williams (rbwillnj), he offers a 1/2" Powder Slide with 2 Bushings
and spacers.......Reasonable price.......

I'll give you  top part of the powder Housing if you need one.........

Thanks Doc,

A half in powder slide is fine for .357, but it's probably not the best choice if you want to get up to 22 grains of 2400.  The biggest Hornady Pistol Powder bushing will only get you to 15.5 grains of 2400, but if you remove the bushing and just use the 1/2" hole you can throw a charge of around 21.5 grains of 2400.

For 22 grains of 2400, you would be better off with a 5/8 powder bar.

I found 3ft of some 5/8 square brass on McmasterCarr.com. (8951K733) $48.11 ($84.40 6ft)plus tax and shipping The tolerances are +-.006.  Would that work for the 5/8 powder bar.

Would this Work for the material?

I'm not a machinist, but if you have a source to do that work, making a spring pin
& install the rollers........ROCK ON My Man.........
You still should try (Barrel tester) and see if he would do the work...........

Please observe..Proper format for emails....

Try him at this:
starmachine(at)volcano(dot)net

To get the Program(Forum) to not blank out the email, you have to spell out  'AT' & 'DOT'

Then put the proper 'signs' in when you email him with your emailer.......

Bill bought the assets of Star Machine Works.....the reloader portion anyway.   Mostly what he sells is old original Star inventory.  He has had some parts made for him by others.  As I understand it, he is not a machinist.

I have never had a problem with anything I have bought from him.  I have had some issues with his business model.   Sometimes he is very responsive other times not.

Made contact with Bill on March 27.  He sent me the current price list with payment address.

He said he would be back in town in two weeks from 1 Mar.

So.....I sent him a Personel check (This way I can stop payment if need be)  on the 14th Mar and havent been able to get ahold of him since.

I hope he comes through..........................................I was wanting the 5/8 housing and powder bar.

I had to wait longer than expected, and communication was spotty, but Bill did come through with the correct parts, and quality was not in question.

I posted somewhere else on this, but first order was about six to eight weeks. Second was about nine months, maybe a little longer.
There were some mix-ups(misplaced check, shipped to incorrect address) on his end on that order. Everything worked out. As said before. he does meet his obligations, and there are no issues with the parts quality.

Bruce commented on patience in his post then. He was correct then and still is.

It has been my experience in dealing with Mr. Cunningham, if you will leave him a phone number where you are available. He will be in touch soon, like a day or so.
I think he likes to talk rather than type.
