Star Reloaders / Indexer-Broken Spring
« on: November 03, 2021, 05:51:57 pm »
I have had/used 2 or 3 of these indexers over the yrs but have no paper on them. The unit operates by meaans of an arm pushing a slide w/ a "U" shaped end against a case moving it to the next position(Prime). The movement is accomplished by a short upstroke of the operating handle.

A small coil spring secures to the above U shaped part. This coil spring is broken... Can anyone provide info on this spring?? A supplier? Instructions to make one?

Thanks,
Ron

Star Reloaders / Adapting A Star to Power Drive
« on: July 22, 2019, 10:04:35 pm »
Has anyone had experience with building a drive unit or adapting one of the aftermarket units, such as the  www.MarkVIIloading.com
which are designed for use on Dillons' 850's or 1050's?

Age arthritis and other small joys are why I ask.
Thanks,
Ron

For health reasons I am considering having my star set up to run with a cylinder.

Does anybody have experience with a machine set up in this manner?

Star Reloaders / Problem w/ Primer Transfer Bar, Primer Punch, & Bushing
« on: December 17, 2009, 05:45:43 pm »
I recently had jams caused by the primer bar being stopped by a primer punch bushing that was not seated properly.

I stoned the bushing top & bottom. The circumference of the punch head showed some marking but no scratches or burrs. neither had the top or bottom. When slid in & out it did not move freely. I spun it in a hand drill against a stone until it was
free. I cleaned the area w/ a small brush & air. Since this I have loaded 230 rds of 45 acp, the round which gave the problem. These little frustrations are occurring more often as the yrs & round count accumulates.

All this being said the condition of the various parts & the operation of the machine is a tribute to the designer & builders! I wonder if 50-60 yrs down the road the plastic & stamped parts in use for the new machines will allow the same to be said

Loading Data & Reloading Procedures / 9 mm cases in the "Freeloader"
« on: August 30, 2009, 02:29:08 pm »
I'm using a home made copy of the "Freeloader" and in running my 1st 9's am getting a large number of upside down case feeds. Have any of you encountered this problem? Will a smaller diameter tube work or solve the problem?

I have used this freeloader for years & many rounds of 38's & 45's.

Thanks,
Ron

Loading Data & Reloading Procedures / Preferred Bushing/Powder Bar Shape
« on: January 31, 2009, 05:42:44 pm »
I am interested in hearing if members have found a tall-thin column of pdr or a short-wide column shaped bushing gives the best results in various powders? Do course grains prefer either? It would seem when using fine grain powders shape wouldn't be too important.

The difference in height possible in a star would be the thick bars using commericaly available bushings, or at the other end, an "O" bar with a larger diameter.

Thanks,
Ron

Can anyone provide the amount of 231 used in the 1911 converted to 38 special? I'm also interested in the type & amount of crimp.

I currently use 2.75 of bullseye & set the crimp by adjusting the seating die with a factory round inserted in that station.

Thanks!

Star Reloaders / Leaving pdr in mag between loadings
« on: July 19, 2008, 01:36:19 pm »
How many of you do this? I have talked to shooters who say they never remove powder. I always do. I have experienced "caking or bridging" if left for just a few hrs. I have tried stirring it w/ the primer follower before resuming and still had the problem.

Loading Data & Reloading Procedures / Wolf Primer Usage
« on: April 12, 2008, 12:48:54 pm »
Can anyone provide experience using Wolf Primers? I've had problems with CCI, as everyone seems to have had, & currently am using a small supply, 5k, of Fed which require xtra wt on the primer follower. Interested in saving a $ with the rapidly increasing price of components but wish to avoid trouble too!

Thanks!!

Star Reloaders / Star Original Equipment
« on: October 24, 2007, 10:26:31 am »
Hi All,

I purchased my 1st Star many yrs ago and can't remember exactly all of the the items included with the machine. Here's what I recall. The machine was a 45acp universal w/o TC die. Extra's were small primer conv components; slide, punch & bushing, feed tube & a spanner wrench. There was also a packet of replacement primer punches.

Perhaps some of you who purchased your machines new can comment as to the accuracy of my list?

Thanks,
Ron H

With the demise  of shooting related items on ebay I am curious where the "Star Market" has gone? Are they showing up on another auction site?

Thanks!

Star Reloaders / Universal vs Progessive Identification
« on: January 11, 2007, 04:07:01 pm »
What features can be readily observed to distinguish the 2 versions? Were the Progessive's only made for 38 & perhaps 45? I have read on ebay, by a regular seller, that the ID of the 2 versions are not easily deterimined.

I recently obtained what I judge to be an older machine in 38. Although horribly dirty, it had no serious rust, the machine cleaned up well. I ran sev cases thru it adjusting the dies and all is in order. The owner apparently believed in the use of lubrication which helped preserve it.  There are minor differences from my 70's produced Universal (purchased new) so I have a  machine for comparison.

The survivability of these machines is quite remarkable. I recently helped a new shooter set up a "blue" machine w/ all the options. After more set up time (2 working) , than it took to tear down, cleanup, & reassmble the old Star, it was returned for troubleshooting while the Star is ready to produce amunition. Setup for my original Star was securing to the bench, adding powder & primers, then adjusting bullet seating depth.

Thanks for information any of you provide.
